Andries: the fact that you're willing to debate the matter already implies that, at some level, you've embraced that topics surrounding football are in fact debatable, even the rules of the game. Controversy is a part of football, always has been, precisely because it's a debatable sport in all its dimensions.

Only because we make it debatable. In reality there are rules for situations such as these. Even if Heinze had all ball and a red would seem very harsh, if the ref whistles a foul in that particular situation it's simply red. That's what the rules say. It's only because we twist them every time that football becomes a very debatable sport.

The sport is played by humans and guided by one referee, which isn't an awful lot compared to other games. Rules simply cannot be strictly enforced.

Not under the current circumstances, but we all know that those could be changed. What annoys even more is that FIFA (there happens to be a documentary about FIFA's corruption on Canvas right now) does all they can to make the sport even more grey. Why creating such an odd offside-rule? Because that way it's even more blury. We're going to a situation in which every decision will be both wrong and right.

My point is that they made offside debatable. I mean, how on earth do you manage to make offside debatable? That's like writing a in such fashion you may actually think it's b. Fucked up if you ask me.
