Prison threat for Cafu Tuesday 13 June, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milan stopper Marcos Cafu is facing the threat of a prison sentence if found guilty of falsely obtaining an Italian passport.
Italian prosecutors have called for the Brazilian national team captain to be handed a 10-month jail term should a guilty verdict be handed out.
The case originally dates back to 2001 when the South American, then at Roma, was one of 11 players to have allegedly gained EU citizenship by falsifying paperwork.
The public prosecutor in charge of the case has also asked for Roma President Franco Sensi, Cafu’s wife and former Giallorossi striker Gustavo Bartelt to be handed sentences too.
A host of non-European players applied for Italian citizenship in the 1990s and 2000s in order to fall in line with player restrictions.
However, even if the 36-year-old is found guilty of wrongdoing then he is set to avoid a spell behind bars.
Italian law dictates that individuals with a clean record are usually handed suspended sentences for offences which carry less than two years.
