My uncle, the owner of my business, has had this scheme for the past 10 months about wanting to compete with facebook, or at least trying to make a quick dollar off of something like it. Well, he knows I refuse to participate with anything like this, so he's just come up with a plan to do it, but tell me he's not. In any case, he still believes he can do this, and has insisted I post this email to all of my "Internet junkie friends" to see what they think...

The email is as follows:

If you are intrigued by the following, email me back and just say…. “Count Me In.” And then, be sure to let your best friends know of this opportunity.

And as you read this, remember too, we are NOT trying to compete with any other social network site. This is a quasi unique product with its own objective.

What I am doing is reaching out to folks who already participate on some sort of social network site in order to gauge their interest in the launch of a new social network site. While all social network sites pretty much do the same thing value is a direct function of activity and perception.

The reality is that, for this new site to be successful, the daily hits and activity must be instant and exponential. People behave in a “Herd Mentality” which is to say, most are followers. But my “Launch Team” must possess a passion for social networking and be willing to promote the site to their peers, colleagues, family, friends, workplace, etc. And as the site grows in activity, it will certainly grow in value. And my way of saying “Thank You” to the launch team is to insure they get a piece of the action should the site achieve “Value Status.”

My goal is to have a launch team ready and eager to make it happen. My design team is working on the Beta and I should have it ready for your review and comments soon. I estimate that my “launch team” will be limited to 10,000 people. Seems like a big number until you break it down. And we have all done the doubling exercise…. Take a penny and double it every day an see what the number is after 30 days. Staggering.

The premise of this new site focuses on a combination of the following:

1. The simple social network itself. Friends connecting with friends.
2. The ability to find an old friend based on a chance meeting of years ago
3. The ability to further your career or endevour based on a member in your networks willingness to make an introduction to a decision maker
4. Assisting our service men and women who are attempting to find employment in the private sector post deployment (a patriotic feature)
5. Establishing a foundation to help those who can’t help themselves (Giving back is the greatest reward)

So here is the skinny. I don’t need your money. I merely need your enthusiasm, passion and drive. Together we can create something of which we can all be proud. (and in short order, we can look at the valuation and success of our product and say… “That’s my company.” And…. Valuation is a function of demand, demand generates advertising revenues, revenues ultimately are distributed to the owners and…….. need I say more? (one quick note… There is no shortage of VC money once they see the product and the assembled and poised team)

So, if you know someone now that would like to be a part of the “launch team” have them send me an email. No information will be shared or distributed. Everyone will get an opportunity to comment on the beta so that when we do launch this….. It’s got the perfect look and feel.

I will email you weekly to let you know the progress on the beta and to also let you know the membership count of the launch team.

And we are now into the 2nd day of just 2 small LinkedIn posts and I have received 10+ “Count me in’s.” By next week I expect the count to over 100. I expect the beta to be ready for review in 1-2 weeks, tops. Launch in the Spring.

And I can tell you. This is exciting!!!

Thanks again for wanting to be a part of this,

Tom
If anyone is interested, contact me via PM with your email address and I'll shoot it over to him.

TBH, his email looks identical to countless hundreds who had the same idea. I see nothing defensible or unique about his plan, save for the micromarket identified in #4, other than to "gain more users" out of thin air.

Nothing against your uncle, but his shit is weak. The human capacity to believe that nobody ever thought of the exact same idea before you is amazing.

Which is why these forums get so many new threads that ask, "Where do I get Juve tickets?"

Naw, it's cool. The thing is that many of the big successes have to face a lot of naysayers. Google when Inktomi had cornered Yahoo's search market, etc. But unless your plan really stands out and offers a unique and defensible position, you're just travelling in the footsteps of every other failure that tried to ride Facebook's coattails.

I thought the same thing as Greg. But I'm willing to help promote the site. Since Grid doesn't reveal much in the email, who knows what it's all about. To judge it we need to know the specifics.

:agree:

Thing is facebook is like a AIDS virus,it can change according the host's reaction, they have a strong hold on the social networking and trying to compete against them will take something new. For example the invite to the website should be something other [not as radical as smoke signal] than a Email written for all and a long one at that...most of the internet junkies who would try something new are also lazy and dont read that long.

But if the social site he owns is something new and good one might consider it.

I just smoked a joint,so dont mind :D

If he was really serious about making some cheddar off of this, he should find a way to bilk the many people who think they can create a rival to Facebook from their own limited business plans. You know -- like Levi Strauss selling pants to the wannabe gold miners in San Francisco. Now that is a reasonable business plan. Even if it is shady and could get him on a mob hit.

What do you mean, somehow conglomerate the ideas of all of them into one?
