I've seen my fair share of hospitals & doctors the past few years (multiple MRI's, other scans, minor surgery, etc) and I couldn't even tell you what I've had to pay myself. As in: I don't remember, because it was peanuts. For which I'm grateful, obviously.
My Mom has multiple sclerosis and her meds are like 25.000€ a year, for which she pays like 10€ every 3 months. Healthcare alone would be reason enough for me to never wanna live in the US.

I had a friend who took a spill while hiking with us in Peru. She really got busted up. When we got back to the hotel, they called a medical crew and they were there within the hour from the closest town, doctor and all. Gave her meds and fixed her up. The bill was not even 100USD. If that happened in a trail in the US, it would have been 90,000 USD or some shit.

So much of the Murican dream is just a total scam. Muricans just don't know because they've never been anywhere before and don't know anything.

i was on holiday in slovenia (+italy, croatia) with my family, just trying to catch up with the news. did trump really deploy the national guard to dc after big balls was beaten by two 15-year-olds?

fucking hell
He sure did. Now different agencies are walking around DC harassing citizens. According to local news, businesses are already feeling a hit as people don't want to be out and about in a police state.

I remember just a few years ago when MAGA complained about lockdowns and police states due to Covid. Now we have a bigger one and they don't care. Just total scumbags.

But there's also a downside: a lot of money wasted & lots of people profiteering from the system. Cuts will (have to) be made in the near future.
No. No cuts.

We have by far the cheapest system possible. Once you privatize or limit, that's when this shit gets expensive. Healthcare has to be universal and virtually free in order to be affordable for a society.

Not to mention, there's obscene amounts of waste and profiteering in a privatized system anyway.

How do people even pay these stupid bills?
For the crazy ones like that story often going to media is the only option. NPR has a monthly(!) segment discussing just one bill at a time so if you’re lucky in winning that lottery you probably won’t pay anything. But if insurance denies the coverage hospitals usually waive a good part of the bill. Unfortunately the remainder is still too much.

crazy story. hope you've been successful.
I have 2 kids now but not because of that long shot test or any other treatment.

Only expensive Murica hospital bill I ever received was in college. Had an ER trip, got stiches, came out to $7,000. This was probably back in 2016 or so.I was still on my parent's insurance which brought the $7,000 down to about $2,000.

I submitted a claim of financial hardship, that I had no $ because I was a college student, and hospital collections gave me the option to pay it out installments of $25 a month for forever. I counter offered to pay them $75 up front and they accepted. So I only paid $75 out of the $7,000 bill but yea the system here is beyond rapacious
