Actually agree. I Will also add the ability for big pharmaceutical to advertise and spend billions indoctrinating people to automatically use the drug. Then they complain that they can’t make the drug cheaper yet they fight for the ability to not allow generics. Who are they fooling we know it’s about the money not the health of the people
To anybody interested in this topic I recommend reading Dreamland by Sam Quinones. Its story begins in 1980s when a group of doctors push for recognizing pain as a vital sign, and also push for opioid pain relievers, which according to a very limited (and actually unrelated) study was not supposed to be addictive when prescribed correctly. Purdue Pharma, the company behind Oxycontin used aggressive marketing techniques to primary care doctors to prescribe Oxy. Oxycontin is a time release drug, which means that if taken per doctor's recommendation technically should not be addictive. However, crushed Oxy pills are pretty much like Heroin. Purdue Pharma apparently knew about this abuse but did not do anything to prevent this for 20 years. Only recently they have released a pill that cannot be crushed.
One of the best parts of the book is where Quinones describes a "Oxycontin economy" is poor white working class communities such as Portsmouth, Ohio. Many people in this communities faked disabilities to get on Medicaid. Using Medicaid cards they could get Oxy pills very cheap and then they were selling them to junkies, who in turn pay for them with goods they had shoplifted from Walmart. Benefits from a Medicaid card far surpassed the disability paycheck.
Anyway read the book. You won't regret it.

One other question about this problem is why is it this bad is white small town communities. Oxy is expensive, so junkies usually turn to Heroin after a while. Heroin in big cities are distributed by drug gangs, but since 1990s a very interesting drug delivery mechanism operated almost exclusively by people from a state in Mexico (Nayarit). These folks are grouped in small autonomous cells, and are totally nonviolent. They deliver the drug to your home in 30 minutes or less, and since they are not violent their way of competing with each other is lowering the price and better customer service (I kid you not). These guys intentionally stay away from big cities because they don't wanna mess with gangs. Their delivery guys are paid a fixed salary(!), which means they are not prone to doing stupid shit like low level drug distributors usually do. DEA is totally unequipped to bust these guys since they are only after large drug busts. Competing cells in small town communities have reduced the price of Heroin by a great deal. Shit economy, pain management clinics (pill mills), and cheap heroin have fueled this disaster for years.
Well the economy is much better now and the issue persists. I also think some of the above I stated also plays a part. As people have less and less self worth and less and less moral imperative for self preservation they tend to look for something to fill the void. Different people different vices but this is definitely part of it
Economy is better overall, but it is hardly improved in rust belt. I agree with the people losing moral imperative and self worth, but a lot of it is also related to the economy. People in rust belt lost a way of living and they will never get it back. It's hard to come to the terms with it.
Also drugs in small town America is a new problem. People in these communities never saw it coming, and always thought about it as a big city problem, or a problem more prevalent in black communities. It took some time for them to be comfortable to talk about it, and have a different approach to it than criminalizing.

Agree about the rust belt. It is coming back slowly. It’s coming back differently. I think the jobs are different those that were there are never really coming back but others are and that’s why unemployment is down even in those states dramatically. I do agree though that the crappy economy for so long was a contributing factor.
I think the approach needs to be a battle of the mind. People not only need to feel worth they need to know that inherently their worth isn’t tied to a job or status in life etc. For so long we as a society have made personal worth attached to material goods and the possession of said goods along with the status at which you work to obtain those goods. Blue color workers were once respected as the back bone of society, farmers and ranchers were treated with admiration. Yet that changed in the 90’s everyone had to have a white color job and anything less was demeaning. Problem with that is that A) everyone can’t be white color B) we need blue collar workers C) blue collar jobs are as respectful and admirable as white color jobs if not more so.
Once these stigmas are reversed and people once again have pride in themselves and what they do no matter what , psychologically it will start to change

I stopped. Couldn’t do it anymore. The answer to everything was take this and call me in the morning. I would refuse to take meds and he wouldn’t have a solution for an alternate route. So I started researching and my new OD is great whole body mind and soul. He has his MD and two phds and he knows the alternate stuff.
