Guys,

What's good and FREE soft for editing (cutting and merging) movie files?

How is Windows Movie Editor (or whatever its name is)?

Windows Movie Maker is pretty good considering it's free. It's user-friendly and produces decent results

It works...

But as I am trying to split a file- I can't do it. I am following the instructions- selecting a file, but the option in the Clip menu are inactive. Same with combining files.

Anybody has any clues?

if you're planning to save your file in avi format, consider using virtualDub, one of the best freeware there.

I am using Sony Vegas rather than Adobe Premiere. I have tried a lot, such as FinalCut, Movie Shaker, Quicktime etc.

If you just want to split I suggest: AVI splitter

If you just want to convert I suggest: #1 video converter

anyway, take a look at tucows and choose what is best for your needs.
