Chelsea will unveil the Serbia-Montenegro striker Mateja Kezman next week after last night agreeing a £5.4m fee with his club PSV Eindhoven.
Kezman, who has hit 95 goals in four seasons with the Dutch club, attracted an inquiry from West Bromwich and an earlier £4.7m bid from Charlton. But Chelsea launched their surprise move after the new manager Jose Mourinho envisaged the 25-year-old target man leading the line at Stamford Bridge.
"He is one of the top strikers in Europe," Chelsea's chief executive Peter Kenyon said. The signing indicates Mourinho's intention to depart from the 4-4-2 of his predecessor Claudio Ranieri to employ a 4-3-3 formation, using Damien Duff and Arjen Robben as wide forwards.
More of Ranieri's work will be undone when Hernan Crespo completes his expected free transfer to Milan. According to a report in yesterday's Gazzetta dello Sport , Kenyon has made contact with Milan to offer the Argentina international on a free transfer.
Michael Owen is to follow Steven Gerrard's lead in throwing his support behind Rafael Benitez's new era at Anfield and finally sign a two-year extension to his contract at Liverpool.
The England striker, who had 12 months to run on his current deal, will put pen to paper before he departs on a summer holiday next week. Owen is likely to see his wage packet inflate from £60,000 to £75,000 per week.
Barcelona will report Manchester United to Fifa and demand compensation after the English club signed the Spain Under-17 international defender Gerard Piqué on Thursday.
