A much married Nigerian man has bowed to pressure from local Islamic leaders to divorce 82 of his 86 wives to avoid an eviction order from his home area for violating religious norms. The Nigeria news agency (NAN) reported that Mohammadu Bello Masaba, an 84-year-old from the central Niger state agreed to retain only four of the wives in accordance to the Holy Koran.
The Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI), one of Nigeria's top Islamic bodies, had issued a death sentence for Masaba for contravening his religion's rules. But days later the authorities gave him two days to vacate the area unless he divorced 82 of his wives.
The news agency said that at a meeting with Islamic scholars in the area, Masaba agreed last evening to the demands and would commence the mass divorce process and relocation of the divorced wives from Nupeland.
Masaba had vowed to defy the authorities, saying he had not committed any offence and would stay put. "I have not contravened any established law that would warrant my being banished from the land... there is no law that says one must one must not marry more than four wives," said Masaba.
"All my wives are with children and some of these are people I have married and stayed with for over 30 years, how can they expect me to leave them within two days," he was quoted as telling various local dailies in telephone interviews.
It could not be immediately established what state authorities decided over the death sentence imposed earlier in the month.
