No, it depends on the team more than anything. I don't think there's a rule about it. I remember Landon and the Galaxy bitching one time because they didn't play on grass.

    correct me if im wrong but i saw a documentary of the cosmos and it looked as though they played on astroturf rather than actual grass pitches is that the case?
    I'm not sure but I think a couple of clubs did/do.

    so this leads me to my next question, why don't the 2 leagues merge and create a proper tier format?
    Cause the tier format would be stupid in the US.

    i:D dk tho. I'm guessing the quality is NASL is way lower.
    The best comparison for NASL would be League 1 and League 2 in England.

    Judging by the level of foreign players in that league League 2 is the very high end.
    It's hard to tell. NASL is interesting. It's not the level of the MLS but occasionally you'll get teams that qualify for the Copa. They're definitely third to fourth tier. But they do have a developmental league.
