Messi was nominated to be best player of the tournament.
Only because he's Messi. If Tevez played the same way Messi did, I'm 100% sure that he wasn't gonna be nominated for best player of the tournament.

It was just like Kaka always being nominated for UEFA player of the year, even when he didn't deserve it at all.

I like the determination shown by Amauri, Diego and Krasic for the team this season

now it's time to prove they're worthy of this jersey

Messi may not have scored a goal - but he played great - had defences at sixes and sevens every time he dribbled towards them.

He was a joy to watch in the WC. Problem is Argentina as a team suck - unlike Barcelona.

I don't think FIFA nominations are to be taken seriously anyway.

But, i think you have it the other way around. If it was someone not Messi and not Ronaldo who played like Messi did, people would have said that he played "well". But because it was Messi, and because it was so low compared to his usual high standards, a lot of people consider it to be a bad performance.

But to be honest, if any player other than Messi did some of the thing Messi did in the WC and created as many, chances and goals, people would say that player played well.

Krasic isn't going to be the saviour of our team but we are better off with him than without him, so like Alen said its a step in the right direction.

and 2008's African player of the year: Adebayor
when Abutreika was the best in everything from performances until trophies won without a doubt, and if not, Drogba and Eto did a lot better than Adebayor but CAF doesn't like them either

I agree with you, FIFA, UEFA, CAF and their pets

Granted he did not deserve to, but by no means was he "average".

Messi played well. But for Messi expectations, they didn't quite live up.

Contrast with Ronaldo, who got all those man-of-the-match awards from FIFA while basically doing little more than hitting the post every other match.

The FIFA nominations (at least the ones for this WC) were fanboy-based, of course. That's why you have to rule them out.

Completely agree, on all counts.

Three okay/good games against three rather weak teams, an average game against Mexico and a zero performance against Germany. And he was nominated for the best player of the tournament. Muller wasn't if I'm not wrong.

He didn't deserve that nomination. I think we can all agree on that.

if milos develops a good understanding with pepe and they do switch sides often they could really wreak havoc in any defense because of their nonstop running. the opposing full backs will not have enough stamina to attack by themselves and will always have to be on their toes with the two guys of yours always making runs (something that is still missing from lanzafame)..

And for one of those 3 matches I will quote the great Silvio Berlusconi :D

"Papastathopoulos, the man who stopped Messi"

:p
Wasn't that the game that Palermo scored a goal in? Did you see what Messi did prior to the goal? I'd love to have a player that does that, when he's "marked out of a game"

What can really improve the team is if we have a CM who can spread passes to Pepe and Krasic. The way Pirlo was doing in Milan and Italy.
In 4-4-2 the team depends a lot on the wingers and their crosses. If a CM can employ the wingers all the time during a match, then good part of the job is done.

That was already when Greece were losing. The very end of the match.

As Bianconero once said, your generation wants a legend, but unfortunately you don't have it yet.
It was the WC. The tournament where the greats earn the legendary status. The thing Pele, Maradona and Zidane did. Messi failed really hard in that aspect.

Maybe in 4 years.

yes, but we do not have someone like that, which does not necessarily mean that our midfield can not work without that ... all the "new pirlos" failed .. just look at cigarini, montolivo & co.

i saw promising things today ... in front of all the passive movement in the midfield and the will to play one-touch-football ... even sissoko had his bright spots today where he spread the game considerably well.

i know melo would want to be our pirlo and try those passes, but i am not sure, if its lack of technique or bad luck that prevented him to pull off those passes successfully the past season.
