Michel Platini won the award three times in a row...that was impressive:cool:
Cruyff and Van Basten won it 3 times too, and the latter would undoubtedly have won it at least one more time had he not been forced into retirement at only 28:down:

Like I said : if you consider the fact that Papin was already a Milan player when he won the award, that makes us even..
But we wont, because he won it for the achievements of the previous season ;)

Im willing to bet that there are a few people on this forum that are desperate enough to care. If you're not one of them, Im going to quote Billy from "the Football factory" and Nick from this forum : "jog on, son".

The announcement is due to be made on Monday night (there'll be a TV show as susual with the laureate), but what will appear in Tuesdays issue (the photo sessions as well as a comprehensive interview) has been done midweek already.

Forza Sheva! Well deserved! :star: I wish we were Tuesday already!

They haven't announced anything officially yet. Milan has just received a call from France Football and as usual there has been a leak.
Oh OK, congrats to Sheva then!

Final ranking of the Golden Ball 2004 :

    1) Shevchenko 175.
    2) Deco 139.
    3) Ronaldinho 133.
    4) Thierry Henry 80.
    5) Zagorakis 44.
    6) Adriano 27.
    7) Nedved 23.
    8) Rooney 22.
    9) Ricardo Carvalho e Van Nistelrooy 18.
    11) Caristeas 15.
    12) Milan Baros e Cristiano Ronaldo 11.
    14) Ibrahimovic 8.
    15) Etòo e Kakà 7.
    17) Dellas, Buffon, Drogba, Lampard e Morientes 5.
    22) Figo 4.
    23) Zidane 3.
    24) Baraja, Giuly, Maniche e Nikopolidis 2.
    28) Maldini e Vicente 1.

A bit controversial as usual : Kakà only 15th and barely two Italians (Buffon and Maldini) nominated (with Totti obviously paying for his euro dribble). But on the whole it's quite accurate I believe.

I would have chosen Deco over Shevchenko, considering the former basically took Porto to the European final with his fine attacking displays. But Shevchenko has been the best forward in the world in the past year.

Robben was not a "high profile" player until this season. Duff is overrated and Reyes did not do much last season. Cristiano Ronaldo was very impressive during Euro 2004, at least to me.

I wouldn't doubt Sheva on top, but ROnaldinho with only 133 points, below Deco? Adriano and Nedved with 27 and 23 respectively?

    Come on now...

A Scandal If Henry Doesn't Get Ballon D'Or-Wenger
    12/13/2004 3:44:00 PM
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has stated his star striker Thierry Henry deserves to win the Ballon D’or award, that will be awarded today in Paris.
“I would give Henry both the Ballon D’Or and the FIFA World Player Award. With what we have won, and the goals that he has scored, it would be a scandal if he doesn’t,” said Wenger.

While the French Gunner could beat Ronaldinho and Deco to the FIFA award, the Ballon D’Or appears destined to end in AC Milan striker Andriy Shevcehnko’s hands.

Henry scored his team’s two goals against Chelsea on the weekend.

    Dinho Congratulates Sheva
    12/13/2004 7:29:00 PM
Barcelona magician Ronaldinho complimented Andriy Shevchenko for winning the 2004 Ballon D’Or award as Europe’s best player.
“He deserves this award for all the great work he has done,” said the Brazilian, who came in third in the running.

Ronaldinho’s teammate Deco came in second despite having won the Champions League and Portuguese league titles with Porto last season.

However Ronaldinho doesn’t think Deco should be disappointed for not having clinched the prestigious accolade.

“Players like Deco, that placed in the top positions of the list, should feel privileged to be ranked so highly,” he said.

Well deserved I suppose, more so than Ronaldinho and ESPECIALLY Henry.

I will always respect Andy for his disrespect of the EPL.

Sheva deserves it mainly because Greece won the Euro and you cannot possibly give it to any of their players no matter how much of a great achievement that was , also because the outstanding player on the planet, Ronaldinho, didnt win anything for his club.
Deco, did win the Cl, but lets face it , he is a player who does so little and does not dominate games and was a let down in the Euros
Henry is a player who will always be fantastic against little clubs, good against big clubs in the premiership , okay in the first rounds of big events but shite in the really crunch matches for both club and country.

If Barcelona wins the league next season, unless Ronaldinho is injured, he will win it 4 sure
