Milan have struggled to replicate the home form which took them to within a whisker of last season’s Serie A crown, instead finding points hard to come by in front of their own public at the San Siro.
The Rossoneri’s high hopes at the start of the campaign were left in tatters by two shock home reverses to Sampdoria and Atalanta. Costa’s powerful header ensured a winning top-flight return for the Blucerchiati, while Cigarini clinched all three points for Stefano Colantuono’s men with a long-range strike.
Two El Shaarawy goals, either side of half-time, made it third time lucky for Milan in their next home fixture against Cagliari.
But their woes continued with a narrow derby defeat to arch-rivals Inter, Samuel stooping at the back post to head in the only goal of the game inside the opening four minutes.
Young prodigy El Shaarawy again proved the difference in the Rossoneri’s next home clash against Genoa, pouncing 13 minutes from time to decide an edgy encounter.
Normal service appeared to have been resumed with a resounding 5-1 demolition of Chievo (Emanuelson, Montolivo, Bojan, El Shaarawy and Pazzini), only for Fiorentina to subsequently silence the San Siro with a surprise 3-1 victory.
