The register is a serious UK-based tech news site. They occasionally stoop to posting amusing articles, funny stuff found on Google earth, anti-Wikipedia rants and even the occasional parody.

Besides, it's one thing for a fansite to keep their style, which is usually just a pet project of one person, quite another for a mainstream newspaper (which gets quoted _a lot_ by other sources btw). If you compared my old Juventuz layout to other fansites today it wouldn't lag behind all that much, whereas if you compare the Inquirer's design to http://www.guardian.co.uk/ (which is also a very simply design), or another publication with long traditions - http://wired.com/, it's a train wreck.
