He is ten times better than Pepe and Martinez. He is not my favorite though, I would prefer someone like Vargas, or an exciting young talent like Mata.
For a few dollars more, you can get a much younger winger at the same level as Bastos with a higher upside. Like young promising players mean much to this team anyways; eventually they all get sent to Palermo/Parma.

Vargas was tearing shit up in Serie A not too long ago. I would take him, but only after we have seriously attempted to procure/acquire Hazard or Mata. I don't think Bale is a realistic option, but with Hazard and Mata we might stand a chance.
That's pretty much what I think. I don't see us getting Mata for less than 25 M euros though...

This is not targeting you Trequartista but i have long concluded that most people who are putting the likes of Vargas and some others over Bastos have not really seen enough of him...truth is, if you like Krasic, then you will love Bastos, because he is a few notches above the Serb and was one of Brazil's better players at the WC plus a Lyon standout since he joined in 2009. He was even a bigger star for Lille and has scored more goals than the likes of Krasic, Vargas and Hazard over the last 4-5 years or so... He is on the cusp of being among true World Class talent and perhaps a big named club in a now slightly more respected league will take him there...I really do hope we get him for his versatility and unpredictability going forward. Truth is, while he isnt a Maldini, he certainly isnt a chum at LB either...it doesnt mean much, but he wuold be an immediate upgrade to anybody that we currently have or have been seriously linked to. Nonetheless, if we get him, I would rather see him at RW or LW, interchanging with Milos...

Well, either Bastos or Vargas would be good buys and much better than Pepe.

Hazard and Mata are definitely exciting players, but some would argue that thats all they do really and with little effectiveness. Hazard has been playing top flight football since 07 and only produced 16 goals and 18 assists in over 100 games...so sure has a great dribble and all that but is he really an effective force? Mata - 33 goals in 130 games or so and lets not forget that he plays an even more advanced role than Hazard or Bastos in many games. Bastos has scored over 40 goals since 07 and over that period has been juggled between LB, RW and LW for his clubs...so while i can understand why folks are excited especially about Hazard, if we want some one who will most likely fit in immediately and who will actually produce the good, while looking good doing so, we should be happy if Bastos does come here. I'm not knocking Hazard or anything but he really has nothing over Bastos (except age of course)

I just think the issue is that if we are going to play with wingers and a possible quag matri attack, we are missing someone capable of doing what del piero did in the past...taking over the game through the middle. I think bastos is a great player, howver as stated he is similar to krasic. I believe we need someone who is able to cut in a nd play the silky pass and create goals opposite to krasic. If don't have a player like this I feel we will be a soley counter attacking team. We could see this year that this worked agianst the top teams as we sat back and hit them on the counter, but suffered against so many smaller teams that sat back against us. We didnt have anyone capable of picking apart a defence, and I do not belive bastos will help that cause

Hazard in 2007 played four games as a sub and with only 16y (?). It's just not fair to compare a 20y player consistency and effectiveness with a 27y's (who'll turn 28 in the summer). It doesn't make any sense.

"He has nothing over Bastos."
Priceless. How I love you stats guys. Btw, take this years stats if you want:

APPS | GOALS/ASSISTS
MB: 40 | 15
EH: 49 | 16

Looks like Eden is not that bad in terms of effectiveness compared to Bastos.

I never said he was bad Flamez...I was simply trying to put everything into perspective given the general attitude in the thread towards Bastos in comparison to Eden. Most people seem to think Eden is leaps and bounds better...sure he is younger, but is he really better at this stage or more just hyped because of his age I would be pleased with either. I take your point on his first season but as for this year's stats Bastos played 10 games less because of his injury and scored two less goals than Eden...forced far more saves with over 60 shots on goal to Eden's 30...plus remember Bastos had that injury this season as well. But yea...both good players, i just don't get why some folks are dismissing Michel as a bad target

Hazard will be amongst the prime candidates for best Ligue 1 player this season, and previously chosen as best young player. Watch both and you will easily see that Hazard is better (even if Hazard has been inconsistent at times due to his age, plus majority of those 100 games arent starts), Bastos is a goalscoring midfielder, and mainly did well in Lille, NOT Lyon where he is nothing out of the ordinary for.

I would agree with you regarding Bastos and Vargas (even if Vargas is a better crosser, and would not take up non EU role), but Hazard is almost decade younger and is basically already the better player. Its pointless to use stats like the last 4 seasons, when Hazard was 16 when he started out, and has for most of that time being an eager youth player developing from the bench getting handful of games, getting minutes more and more here or there, until he established himself.
