The funniest thing about Stewart Downing is that Liverpool were convinced to sign him by a faked Youtube video.

With Stewart Downing currently notching the underwhelming statistic of no goals and no assists this season a horribly embarrassing story has emerged about Liverpool’s American owners John Henry and Tom Werner.

According to James Pearce in today’s Liverpool Echo: “When John Henry and Tom Werner were informed about Liverpool FC’s interest in Stewart Downing last summer they turned to the internet to find out more. The Reds’ principal owner and chairman stumbled across a video on YouTube which grabbed their attention.

'There was some footage of Stewart where he is, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it’s brilliant,’ Werner recalled. John and I said: 'Oh my god, this player is brilliant, we’ve got to figure out a way to make a deal with him’.’ The American duo later discovered the footage had been doctored but the excitement at Downing’s arrival remained.”

Besides his performances on the pitch for Liverpool, and recent off-field indiscretions, this story is likely to heap further embarrassment on Stewart Downing’s time at Anfield.

I wonder if these American guys actually knew anything about football before they bought the club. They shouldn't have had any involvement in scouting players. Personally I'd say it was all down to Dalglish.

Cissokho confirms Juve meeting

By Football Italia staff

Juventus have a deal for Martin Caceres, but Aly Cissokho’s agent confirmed he “will meet with Juve on Friday.”

They secured one full-back today by agreeing terms with Sevilla for Caceres, though that does not appear to be the end of their January spending spree.

Cissokho has a contract until 2014. Lyon proposed a two-year renewal, but we did not accept because he wants a change of scenery,” Ali Barat told Calciomercato.it.

At the same time, Lyon have to sell, because they need fresh funds. I am here in Italy because I will meet with Juve on Friday.

“If Cissokho leaves in January, then it will be only for Juventus. In the summer we can open the doors to Manchester United, thanks to Evra’s injury.

“We recently received a €7m offer from Newcastle, but Lyon value him at €9m and we know Juve have more of a budget to spend.

Juventus are a great team who play attacking football and Aly wants to play in the Champions League next season. Roma? At the moment they don’t have the resources.”

Cissokho came very close to joining Serie A a few years ago, when his transfer to Milan collapsed because a medical found problems with his teeth.
