The question was, after a stunning mercato campaign, should we renew Marrotta? My answer was no. I stand by that. Its not really a question that will come up for debate in the current scenario as things stand, I'm well aware of that fact. I went on to explain my reasons why. I genuinely feel Marrotta is being made to look more adept at his job because results are in our favour and we have a coach who knows what he is doing.
In fact, it's ironic, I was really really happy when Marrotta was first appointed but very quickly realised the quality of the team he built in his first season. And even more ironic, was at the start of this campaign I was totally against Conte being appointed coach for the very reason that he had an amateur board behind him. While in discussion with Hustini before we got involved in our discussion, I went on to mention my biggest apprehension with Marrotta, leaving the last two years aside, is the time ahead.
Del Piero's retirement is going to leave a huge void in this team. It probably hasn't hit some of us, but I know the team will feel it even though they dint rely as much on him on the pitch. With perhaps a more than solid chance to qualify for Europe, I know this team is going to need that one game changer in our ranks. We are solely lacking that. And after two seasons, and spending close to what, 200 million we don't have one of those to show in our books? It could be argued that we didn't have Champions League, and we played in a shit, loser Serie A league but whats worrying is, that this is new territory for Conte, and hes not going to be able to help Beppe out much on this front and this is where Marrotta's expertise will probably have to come into play.
From the way he goes about closing deals or not, i don't know if he has the wherewithal to build a Champions League worthy team. I'm only too happy for Marrotta to prove me wrong but its not going to happen when you're constantly chopping and changing a team around because you're not sure on how to judge the calibre of players as an individual. Have you kept count of how many players have been bought since his arrival? 20 odd. That's not how a Champions league team will function. This is not because there are thousand better directors than him in Italy. Purely, judging him I don't think he was good enough to be here. And the reason I probably despise him as much as Secco and probably more is, because Secco never had any experience and would make idiotic transfers, but this guy has been around long enough to have made better transfers at a club like Juve. But he's never quite understood the meaning and requirements of a club like this coz he's too conditioned by all the time he functioned at Sampdoria. Too many mistakes in a short span of time. Anyway, apologies to everyone for making this a Marrotta discussion. Will stay on topic.
