Date of birth April 3, 1984 (1984-04-03) (age 26)
Place of birth Buenos Aires, Argentina
Height 1.91 m (6 ft 3 in)
Playing position Striker

Club career

River Plate
López started his career in 1997 with River Plate. On 19 August 2001, at the mere age of 17, he made his senior debut against Talleres de Córdoba. That same season, the player was officially promoted to the senior squad, following 5 years with the youth program. With River Plate, he was a standout striker and the club won the Torneo Clausura in 2002, 2003, and 2004. López remained with the club until his transfer to Spanish giants FC Barcelona in January 2005. With River Plate, Lopez made over 60 appearances, scoring nearly 20 goals.

FC Barcelona
In January 2005, FC Barcelona signed the Argentine striker for €6.2 million following an injury to striker Henrik Larsson. López failed to break into the club's first team, and despite scoring a wonder goal on his European debut, against Chelsea F.C. in the UEFA Champions League, he was not a regular in the team. In his first season with the Catalan giants, López made just 13 league appearances. He transferred to RCD Mallorca on loan for the 2006–07 season, where he failed to live up to the expectations, scoring only three goals in 25 matches, and hence returned to Barcelona in the summer of 2007, only to be sold simultaneously to FC Moscow.

FC Moscow
On August 16, 2007, López signed with FC Moscow after a transfer fee of €2 million was agreed with Barcelona.[3] With the club, López made 22 league appearances scoring 9 goals, but on February 13, 2009, Brazilian club, Grêmio signed López on a 1-year loan from FC Moscow.[4] During his season long loan, the strker managed 11 goals in 25 league starts, and was scouted as a transfer target by several European clubs including Calcio Catania, Chievo Verona, Genoa CFC, Ajax, and Vfl Wolfsburg

Calcio Catania
On January 20, 2010 Lopez officially signed a 4-year contract with Calcio Catania, in the Italian Serie A.[1] He scored his first Serie A goal on 7 February 2010, providing the only goal in a key 1–0 away win at Stadio Olimpico against struggling S.S. Lazio.[5] Following his transfer, Lopez broke right into the club's starting line-up under coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, knocking Japanese international, Takayuki Morimoto to the bench. Lopez went on to score 12 goals in just 17 appearances for his club, following his winter transfer and instantly became a fan favorite, and a transfer target by many clubs around Italy. Lopez led his club to a 5th consecutive avoidance of relegation, also guiding his team to a record points total for the club, also ensuring a 12th place finish in the league. Under Mihajlovic, Catania lost just 4 games in 6 months, following his appointment on December 8, 2009.

International career
Maxi López represented his birth nation of Argentina at Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 levels, also taking part to the 2003 South American Youth Championship. He is currently eligible for both Argentina and Italy, as he holds both citizenships and has never represented any national team at senior level. In July 2010 he explicitly stated he might accept a call-up from the Azzurri.

Its common knowledge that we need a striker. Quag has done a great job pushing further forward than perhaps he would like to ideally...acting someway between a second striker and a prima punta, when he plays with DP. Now Iaquinta is getting back to fitness, amauri is injured or by now definitely dead as a footballer even when physically fit...we desperately need a target man, a proper prima punta...there have been many reports, from a variety of sources, not just the goal.com goons and their compatriots in the BullsHit Journalism game, linking us to Maxi...Marotta mentioned late last month that it was too early to talk of negogiations for Lopez, but after amauri returned to the team, played shit, then got injured for another month, maybe he will see more urgency, in the pursuit of Lopez, who could well do us proud until the end of the season when we can lose VinnyCenzo (and Amauri if we cant shift him in January), and bring in Dzeko to battle with Lopez for the prima punta role...Anyway, I thought it was worth sticking up on here, to get your opinions, on the liklihood of the transfer, and his suitability to our needs.

i wanted to talk about maxi lopez with other Juve supporters...as our links to him keep popping up. With even Marotta himself mentioning him late last month.
"Despite the friendship with Pietro Lo Monaco and with Catania in general, we have made no attempts for the Argentine, so it's too early to talk about a possible negotiation. In any case I think that Catania will keep them tight". Cassano seems boring to speak of now Agnelli ruled out a move for him. the Neymar business is an unlikely dream...this story seems to have some substance to it. but no...i am actually hesitant of starting transfer threads, hustini.

We should only be talking about Dzeko and close the other threads. Dzeko trumps everyone else.

Would you not see Lopez as a decent stopgap measure before we grab Dzeko in the summer, mate???

We can have Yaki and Quag for depth, and Catania wont loan him out (half season loan would be only way it would make sense), because buying him from Catania who would ask for more then even Martinez, when we dont really need him, would be a laugh. And typical.

The problem with Quag as a backup is that we have to pay another 10M Euros for him if we wish to sign him this summer. That's pretty steep for depth players.

How strange that I am eager to learn of the opinion on a member who in the past I have locked horns with, rather childishly...but still...it just makes me smile, as first impressions can often be awfully misconstrued.

    Andy...

I quite like what Quag has achieved so far, especially as he has often played as part of a front two in which his more natural position is taken by DP. He has excelled nonetheless, and if he continues to do so, it will be hard to say he isnt worth grabbing on a full contract. Our striker situation is in flux. Clearly. I was one of the crowd who got on board this wave of optimism regarding Amauri. Unfortunately for Amauri, as well as us all who are connected by heart and spirit the club, it simply hasnt worked out for him. Whilst luck has played its part, as in injuries, when he has played, he has been awful. And as I used to ponder his problems as mainly mental, rather than a lack of talent, and I have seen the fruit of Del Neri's work, in terms of De Ceglie and Melo especially, but also in terms of the team spirit as a whole, I have run out of excuses for Amauri. Its a strange and unwanted situation to have a striker we paid large for, albeit SECCO paid large for, who did well to begin with, then simply died as a footballer...What are your views on him???And also, what we are to do with him???? Its bad enough that he has lost all footballing ability, but to make matters worse for us, regarding finding potential suitors for his signature, he has now become injury prone, decreasing his plummeting value even more heavily. I just assume, that your views on our attack, for now and the future, simply excluse Amauri, as he must be sold at a major loss, or shot, if only to get him off the wage bill, freeing up, with our current wage structure frugally governed by Marotta, enough space for maybe two players...

which leads me back to where this begun.

I see Quag as a second striker, as im sure he sees himself, most naturally, as a footballer. DP looks likely to have his contract extended. Ideally, we have two players fighting for each position, with one more talented than the other, but still, enough room for competition, for keeping the more talented on their toes. Our formation lends itself to a prima punta and second striker. Although Krasic becomes a wide forward much more naturally than an out and out winger. but forget krasic, because he IS our right winger, or left winger, depending on injuries and suspensions and fitness. So we have an elderly DP, a quagiarella, excelling presently in a more advanced role, a VinnyCenzo. Vinny seems our only natural out and out striker. I share the opinion of many that he can be useful as a squad player, if we truly aim to recapture our former position as one of the finest clubs in italy, let alone europe.

So...with much talk of Dzeko coming in the Summer, who IS a front man, what do you think of the potential purchase of Lopez???? lets make it easy and say loan with an option to purchase...

the only problem i see with this, is that the option to buy will likely be large, despite his poor form this season thus far. Although Catania's form, as a whole, has been poor. Moving on to the summer, if we plan to sign dzeko, having VinnyCenzo, Lopez, AND dezko is one too many for that one position...

this is directed at andy, but please, im sure others have traveled down these paths of thought, so respond...

(apologies for the spelling, dinner is cooking, i have had a few vodkas, and my lady is due any minute...time to wash what most essentially needs washing, and hope for the best)

What are your views on him??? Amauri, as he must be sold at a major loss
I'd say we simply need to move him at the best price possible to free up some wage space. I too rode the optimism train after Amauri's first six months here, but clearly we can't repair his form. If Villa is serious about the 8M bid, then that would be fine.

And I'm glad you brought up Amauri in this discussion. Quag reminds me a lot of Amauri; not because of his style of play, but rather his history around the league and his start to this campaign. I have always been skeptical of Quag, never thought he had much use apart from some spontaneous threats, and that he goes missing quite a lot. Thus far he has surprised me with the number of goals he has scored, but he still goes missing from matches at times. It wouldn't surprise me to see Quag pull an Amauri, due to what I know about his history. But we'll see.

If he can keep scoring goals like he has thus far, then maybe the extra 10M Euros would be justified.

So...with much talk of Dzeko coming in the Summer, who IS a front man, what do you think of the potential purchase of Lopez???? lets make it easy and say loan with an option to purchase...
I'm not really sold on Maxi. He's been around the block quite a lot, not making a major impression anywhere, but suddenly scores a few goals after his January transfer to Italy. He needs to prove more. I'd look elsewhere.

Yes thats true, and this guy would cost at minimum what Quag will cost us fully prolly (14m). And can you say he is better then him? Or as good? hardly, just has a half season of performances so far his Europe career (was nothing in Spain).
