Camoranesi: “at the team’s disposal”
“Does the prospect of a year in Serie B scare me? Not at all. I’m at the disposal of both club and team and I will do all I can to make sure we get back in Serie A next season”. Mauro Camoranesi opened Thursday’s press conference by putting an end to the rumours of the last few months. “It was a period of uncertainty for all of us, but more than two months have passed now, the championship is under way, and everything is much clearer - I’m a Juventus player. I had talks with the club and we decided to continue our relationship, now it’s just a matter of helping them achieve promotion”. But does he miss top flight football? “I don’t miss anything at the moment. The difference between Serie A and Serie B really isn’t that great; this is a championship which deserves respect”. There’s been talk in the press recently of a move abroad in the January transfer window. “My objective is to finish the season here at the very least. I’m not going to abandon the team half way through the championship”. What are Camoranesi’s first impressions of his new surroundings? “Serie B is very interesting. I don’t want to criticise the quality of teams on Serie A, but there are teams in this division with very proud traditions. It’s a difficult championship and we have had to change our mentality and our approach to games. Three months ago no one would have imagined we would end up here but we’re adjusting well. It won’t be easy but I know we can do it”.
Thoughts turned to the last couple of years. “Not having Juve in Serie A certainly takes quality away from the championship, and with the penalisation of the other teams, only Inter and Roma are left to battle it out. As far as I’m concerned, we’re concerned, last year’s scudetto is our scudetto. We won it on the pitch and players from other teams have acknowledged that”. Mauro then spoke about his hopes for the season that lies ahead. “We need to get the most points possible. If the penalty is reduced then great, if not then we’ll have to be patient. I’m very calm right now though. The euphoria after the World Cup was over very quickly but I’ve found serenity and I’ve moved on. I play for one of the most important teams in Europe and I have the respect of my team mates, which is fundamental given the amount of time we spend together”. And his relationship with the new coach? “Deschamps and I have been speaking since his first day in charge. He was one of those who fought hardest to keep me here. Everyone is very happy working with him, and I like the way he attacks and goes for the win, rather than sitting back and defending”.
And how does the midfielder view the Bianconeri this year? “In terms of quality, I believe Juventus were the best team in Europe over the last couple of years. We’re still very competitive though, even without the players who have moved on, and I’m pretty sure we could have mounted a realistic campaign for a Champions League place had we been in Serie A this season”. And finally, what kind of condition is Camoranesi in as Juventus prepare for their fifth game of the championship? “I’m not at my peak. I didn’t play for two months and I’m slightly behind physically. After two games in five days I’m struggling a little and I’m not sure if I will recover in time for the Piacenza game. I will be travelling though so we’ll see what happens. I’m training hard and I’m looking to find the right condition to play as many games as possible”.
I knew that media insisted the exit of Camoranesi and Trezeguet at all cost,
but now I believe Camoranesi will stay.
Forza Camoranesi, we need you.
