Alessandro Matri has described his joy at getting back amongst the goals in Saturday night’s 4-1 demolition of Roma.
Before firing the hosts’ third over the Giallorossi, Matri’s last goalscoring contribution had been a priceless equaliser at the San Siro back on February 25.
And after bringing an end to his seven month barren streak against rivals Roma in front of a capacity crowd at Juventus Stadium, it’s no wonder the striker is beaming from ear to ear.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky, Matri said: “I’m happy because it’s been a while since I was on the scoresheet. When I gathered Vidal’s pass I realised it represented a good opportunity and when I saw the ball go in I thought about those who have been close to me over the past few months.”
The beginning of the 2012/13 campaign has seen Matri mainly restricted to substitute appearances due to the strong form of Vucinic, Giovinco and Quagliarella.
But when his chance came against the Giallorossi, the former Cagliari man knew how to seize it with both hands.
“Playing every three days, the opportunities will come for everyone. The competition spurs us on, the important thing is to try and keep yourself ready and make the most of the chances that will arise.
“Are the strikers more prolific this year? Now the system is established, we know each other better, we know what to do and so everything is a lot simpler.”
Matri concluded by insisting that Juventus won’t allow complacency to creep in despite their title of Scudetto favourites.
“This year we’ve started out as favourites after winning the Scudetto last time out. But there are other strong teams, we’ve only played six fixtures and there’s a long way to go in the championship.”
