Matarrese named Lega chief
Tuesday 8 August, 2006
Antonio Matarrese is the new President of the Italian Football League after surprisingly winning today’s election.

Although it took six ballots, including the two that took place on July 26, the veteran official received the necessary 26 votes from the 39 Serie A and Serie B clubs present at a meeting in Milan.

Matarrese, 66, is not a new face in the world of Italian football as he was previously President of the League from 1982 to 1987 before he left that seat to Luciano Nizzola.

Matarrese was then chosen as the FIGC President, covering the role until 1996, and was also Vice-President of UEFA and head of the FIFA Fair Play Commission.

The newly elected President will remain in charge until the new regulations are finally approved which will open the door to an external manager.

The election took place the day after FIGC commissioner Guido Rossi threatened to force the Lega into administration if no President was elected before August 29.

Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini was visibly satisfied with the result and said Matarrese was the right man to cover the position.

“This choice may not satisfy the major teams, because I am sure Matarrese will act for the common good of all clubs including the smaller ones,” said the fiery chief who was the Lega’s former Vice-President.

“He is a man of great experience and I believe that men with experience must be used, not sent away.”

Matarrese replaces Milan’s Adriano Galliani who resigned on June 22 after he was indicted as part of the Calciopoli probe.
