About the last 15 years.... i think we also need to take in consideration not only the squad quality, but the coaches.

In the first Lippi stint, we ere in our golden years and were the most consistent side in CL, gaining a reputation that we still enjoy, albeit much less and i dont know for how long.

Ancelotti pre Milan was touted as a loser compared to Lippi, and struggled a lot with a quality team

Then Lippi came again and we did our last positive run in 2003.

After that , things started going downhill. Capello (overrated coach IMO) came with his boring 442 catenaccio (even with players like Camo, Dp, Nedved and Zlatan in the team!!!!!)...

then calciopoli attacked

Deschamps did fairly well in serie B.

And then after him we witnessed a parade of bad management and dubious italian coaches until Conte came. The rest is history until now..

In summary, apart from Lippi , in the last 15 years the quality of our coaches has been abysmal. I think it can count too in how we have failed in the CL runs. After calciopoli we coudnt expect much.... but i think that now it is already time to improve in this category.

You forgot Conte? The guy who thinks Juventus has no history before he came and single handedly became the savior. Gave us the invincible and record 102 points in Serie A.
The amount of gloating he made in Serie A surely made the fans expectation on CL to be in a top 8 is reasonable.

The amount of gloating he made in Serie A surely made the fans expectation on CL to be in a top 8 is reasonable.

As an average, yes. I was not pointing to a single coach, but in general. Apart from Deschamps who did well to take a wounded team to serie A, and Conte´s first season which was too good, the rest has been average.

I think Serie A is a strong championship and it takes a very solid team (and manager) to win it with 102 points. The problem is that Serie A lacks speed and has a pretty strong defence overall. Only Roma, Napoli and Sassuolo are trying to use speed as their main weapon in attack. We are using a solid team and use two players with a lot of stamina on the wings, but lacking with creativity. This solid formation is good against the slow teams, but in Europe the teams are exploiting our lack of speed and creativity rather well.

I still remember in the beginning of the 21st century how much more speed, creativity and flair was used from teams like Lazio, Parma, Inter and even the likes of Reggina. Although this was the time that Serie A start it's decline with the bankruptcy of Parma, Lazio and few years before that - of Fiorentina. Sadly, now, the golden age of Calcio is long gone. Now we are seeing slow, defensive football and even the top teams in Italy can't compete with the finance of many teams in England, Spain, France, Germany and Portugal. Combine that with the clubs pretty corrupt (mismanaging the youth sector and buying pretty sloppy players for 10-15 mil. euro) and conservative management, and the picture gets pretty annoying.

I agree with the rest however

I think Serie A is a strong championship and it takes a very solid team (and manager) to win it with 102 points. The problem is that Serie A lacks speed and has a pretty strong defence overall. I know theres a lot of people that rate serie A very high, but i dont. What i see every week are teams too afraid to take the game to us and just wait an impending death. Teams that are very weak in the offensive department and implement weak counterattack catenaccio , which is innefective against us for the most part.

Competitive teams in europe, on the other hand, press us a little and instantly catch us, making us unable to react to the more pacy football of europe. OR, we face teams like atletico who have proper counterattacking tactics, unlike teams in serie A.

I don't rate Serie A highly at all. It is a far cry from the Serie A I grew up following and loving. However, 102 points is still a monumental achievement, regardless of the poor quality of the league.

I do agree that we do need to be more aggressive, and inject pace and creativity into our game in Europe, as we look predictable against most opponents.

I know people said earlier this season that we are more creative under Allegri, but I honestly don't think that is true. We are having trouble creating chances in most games.
