Huge in my books would have been signing a better option then Canna, another RB and LB. Even though a healthy and in form Zebina is a big upgrade we still lack depth in RB position big time. And that central defensive spot is going to be a weakness for us all year.
Before we started signing midfielders I was thinking/hoping we would have covered all those bases. We only may just be covering one of them.
It was always a big ask to sign players in all three of those positions but to just by the end of the mercato make this one signing isn't really the upgrade I had hoped for. Even still, I'm satisfied with the improvements we're making.

miedfield is the center of a team. a good midfield may do both attack and defence look better.

our attack is top from the year before. but a not so good midield did our attack look worse.

this year it seems we are playing with

zebina canna/caceres chiellini DC

this may not be the best defence but surely is a very good upgrade. in addition to this melo or momo in front of them would make them look even better.

I just don't understand it. What will they learn from Cannavaro that Ferrara or the other coaches can't teach them? If it's about watching Cannavaro play to gain some positional sense, then why not just show them tapes of Beckenbauer, Baresi and Scirea?

This sort of stuff is said just to give us a reason to approve Cannavaro back at the club because we all know he's past it. But I will not fall for the tactic because it doesn't make any sense to begin with. I mean, what the hell is Caceres going to learn from Canna when he will sit on the bench while Canna gets a free ride because master Lippi wants to prepare for the World Cup?

its because when you play with someone is not like watching him on tv
there are just little details that can make the difference for the defenders
i mean... cannavaro is not as big as lucio or Terry physically but he have the ability to read the forwards minds or its just hes so good at positioning...

how many times did you see cannavaro blocking shots in box?

Because we aren't Inter, MEELAN, Chelksi or Real Madrid. We do things differently now.

no andy and i know you are not this stupid, any young player can learn from a more experienced pro, no matter if that players legs have deserted him. in all honesty if caceras does come in i expect canna to be "rested" regularly and a new Cb pairing to form with Chiellini and Caceras which can grow over the years. Canna may not have the legs anymore at the top end of the game but there is no denying the fact that the man was one of the true masters of positional defending while at his peak and that sort of knowledge and experience will be passed over in everyday training. whats better than having Ciro ( a top class defender) as manager? someone of a similar ilk training alongside the defenders that will hopefully shape our future

geta grip of yourself Andy, we all know you hate Canna,always will but his experience will definately help Chiellini along and hopefully Caceras also. i am not saying he is the sane player he was 3 years ago, he isn't! i am not saying he was our first choice,he wasn't!i am not saying he is the CB to build our backline around,he isn't!

But what can a player like Caceres gain from Cannavaro that the coaches can't provide him? I mean sure, if he plays with Cannavaro he may pick up some things, but in all honesty it's not much. And all of this is absurd if Canna is a detriment to the team anyway.

I'm not so sure he will. We have seen Cannavaro and Chiellini together before the Azzurri, and I must say they don't seem to be learning much from one another.

Well, that is true, Cannavaro has experience. But so did fucking Montero with Legrottaglie, and we ended up seeing how well that defense worked out under Lippi.

No offense but all this talk just seems like BS to me. Buffon is the guy who directs the defense anyway.

All I'm saying is that the amount of experience a player has is redundant if he is finished as a player, and it will turn out detrimental to the team.

And anyways, Chiellini has to learn by himself how to become a leader back there. He can't rely on an old and aged Cannavaro to provide the leadership. Neither can Caceres.

The most important thing for our defense is having capable defenders, especially with Buffon back there.
