When you play Robben and Duff together with a CF it will be seen as a 4-3-3, but who cares about starting positions on the field. Lampard was very advanced but also Makelele sat back, the other CM between the pair.
Actually Robben defined the ideal 4231 winger

433 requires all out forwards that are about as defensive minded as an SS and at most will track the fullbacks

451 requires midfielders who'll maraud the entire lenght of the pitch

4231 sits in between. They are the stars of the team with the CAM, but play deeper then actual forwards, making the actions themselves.

If true, that bars him from playing CL with us this season, right?

Not that he'd be brought in as a starter from or key player or anything, but could still prove to be useful at some point.
I believe if they don't qualify for the CL he can play from the group stage, if they qualify and they don't pass the group stage he can play in the knockout stage

Has anyone here actually paid the time watching this guy play? With his height (1.86m) can you see him play as a clinical center forward?
What

No, offcourse not

Locks begin from the groupstage.

We probably got an advantage over other clubs by allowing him to stay that long

Yes, he can play for us starting in the group stage.

Per UEFA.com:

Can a player play in UEFA competition for more than one club in the same season?

As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA club competition (UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, excluding UEFA Super Cup) for more than one club in the course of the same season. However, a player can play for one club in the first, second and third qualifying round, and/or the play-offs, of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League, and then represent another club from the group stage of either competition.

Why not?

And this is me genuinely asking.
He's a player who wants to make forward actions, or will come up from deep. He's a marvellous skilled winger potential. He could play deeper central roles (altho he's less suited to it).
Not central roles, this guy is good at collecting it deeper and beeing impossible to get of the ball, taking on players giving his trademark quick outside right foot passes.

This guy will be better then Reus ever will be.

Off topic but Mourinho certainly played 433 during his first stint at Chelsea and even at Inter he started with that formation which later evolved to 4231 because of Sneijder. At Chelsea he had a brilliant midfield with Makelele, Essien and Lampard the latter being the one with the most freedom going forward similar to Pogba plays with us now.
That was either a defensive 4231 or defensive 451, depends on how you see lampard.

It was not a 433. Absolutely not.
at Chelsea in his 1st stint he played 3 formations, 433, 4312, 4231. it was mostly 433 though, especially in CL:

Fereira Carvalho Terry Bridge
Lampard Makelele Essien
Duff Drogba Robben
/
Gallas Carvalho Terry Fereira
Lampard Makelele Essien
Joe Cole
Drogba Gudjohnsen/Kezman
/
Lampard/Essien Makelele
Duff Joe Cole/Lampard Robben
Drogba

when he 1st arrived at Inter he played 433 (bought Mancini from Roma and Quaresma for that), then developed it into a 442 with Ibra-Adriano/Crespo upfront and in his 2nd season won a CL with 4312:

Cezar
Maicon Lucio Samuel Zanetti/Chivu
Stankovic Cambiasso Motta
Sneijder
Milito Etoo
