He was playing in the bundesliga at that time
Bayern munchen was by no means a finished team by then, but was displaying tremendous tenacity and strength. They had mixed performances in their groupstage, and then 2 very lucky draws before they met madrid.
Madrid, was a repeat of the tie against manchester united 2 years earlyer, and similar to juventus last year. They faced a greatly superior team. Madrid was at the best form off the past 2 decades. Madrid was missing chances when bayern got ahead. Madrid restored the draw and tought they comfortably saw out the game, untill a surprise last minute goal. Yet 2-1 seemed a death sentence going to spain.
Before the return, was the deciding classico for the title. Madrid was in their excellent ways as madrid won 1-2 at the camp nou. Madrid gave alot in that game.
When the return came against bayern, madrid started in the same blistering pace. Madrid went very quickly to 2-0, before giving away a silly penalty to 2-1. Everyone tought it was an delay of execution. But it wasent. Madrid kept going hard and missed chances in the first half, but shortly in the second half, they completely ran out of steam. The classico having demanded too much energy. Bayern held themselves and went trough.
i'll remember that year forever. Madrid and Barcelona were insane. Messi scored 50 in spain and Ronaldo 46. It was the best Madrid and Barcelona teams i've ever seen, and yet exactly that was their downfall.
If Madrid had an upset in the first leg, then what to say about barcelona ? They completely nailed chelsea to their own box, created several clear cut chances, and missed everything. Chelsea however, scored on their one good chance all game.
And then came the second leg. Like Madrid, Barcelona had given everything in the classico. They werent sharp. A less physical game, but mental sharpness was lost. Like Madrid, they went up 2-0, against 10 players. And like Madrid, they gave it all away. Loss of concentration on a lampart run, brought chelsea back in the game, wich should have never happened.
These teams were so much better then everything, but in the end ended up beeing the reason they both got eliminated in europe. With chelsea and bayern taking advantage of the circumstances.
Mandzukic sees this bayern. Capable of doing this yet missing the master piece in the puzzle. The team that used its mental strenght and drive to hold off madrid untill its engine failed. Exactly embodying his own spirit.
That Bayern came knocking on Mandzukic door. With the perfect coach, only truely appreciated in germany at that point. Buying the final pieces.
Meanwhile, Juventus has its first season in 6 years that wasnt sucking balls.
He went to Bayern, and became part of the greatest team from the 21th century. A team that didnt need Barcelona exhausting its opponents, but crushed them once they got ticking.
Lets not be nitpicking peasants. Mandzukic made absolutely the right decision in 2012. And we should kiss both hands he did it again in the summer of 2015.
