He played for France at youth level. Often it's easier for European-based players to do this at those age groups. It takes advantage of the superior facilities and training methods, and exposure to scouts.

I would still have picked France...that way you can win World Cup. And I'm pretty sure that he would have been picked for France national team if he performs well here.
