it was the typical italo-based love he received i guess... combined with some youtube-love or something... it's ok though, because no one here is a professional writer for a sports journal or something. noone will blame you for not being properly informed, but if someone actually would have used tools available to assess mottas quality he would have seen from the start (meaning before we signed him) that he is totally crap.

Wrong, again.

It was a solid move for a decent price.

Not true. Motta was a good player for Udinese, Roma and Italy U-21s.

Marotta did far worse than getting Motta to reserve such criticism.

Wrong.
I actually don't think he did that well for Italy U21s. He had a period of good form at Udinese that lasted into his time at Roma.

He was falling off at Roma but being still young there was a chance he would recover that that form at Juventus.

No, just no.

I remember watching two games for the U-21s where he was man of the match of both. He literally looked much experienced than the others and lead the team greatly.

Playing for Juventus is a different case though.

you can't say no, when you post itself hints to the solution of the riddle.

motta did play for the u21 team and it took me exactly one game to see that this guy is crap. form this, form that

there are certain things that don't happen when you have a certain kind of quality and playing 90% of the passes straight to the opponent just showed that motta is crap.

you wont see a quality player ever reach such a high misplaced pass rate, because someone with a brain would try to play it save after two successive misplaced passes that lead to counters...

@juvejay:

then you probably missed the one game where he was atricously worse than a man without feet

He was definitely good for the U21's, saw him live in one game and in several others.
He was inconsistent.

That he wasn't good with the U21s? No, that's no solution to your "riddle". He was part of a very talented looking team that really failed to perform under Casiraghi. That doesn't mean he couldn't be an effective club level player.

i did not say "he wasn't good with the u21", but did state that i saw ONE game that was so bad that you could totally write him off as anything but a water boy

no good player, no not even a mediocre player would play as bad as i have seen him play regardless of the team around him.

it's just like a guy touch a high voltage wire getting an electric shock and then touching the wire over and over again while getting shocks. that guy makes home simpson look like a MIT graduate

as defender you always have the opportunity to play it safe. if he looked good in some games (that i did not see) well, i can do blind passes the whole time and they will look great when they reach the teammate by luck, but thats about it.

When you play 30 odd games at that level you have a couple of bad ones. He was part of a good team though, captain in fact, so he wasn't isolated as much as he found at club level, going forward more.

I am still trying to understand why he is given the nickname 'escape goat'...at first i assumed it was simply a dumb play on the english phrase of 'scapegoat', but as motta does not at all fit that phrase, i remain, at a loss to explain why you folks keep referring to him as an escape goat.

interesting find in the urban dictionary...as its fits my own thoughts on the matter.

escape goat-
A slang used by idiots who do not realize the term is scapegoat
