Claudio Marchisio has reflected on the last nine months at Juventus and the climax of a thrilling season which led the club to its thirtieth Scudetto victory.
The 26-year-old is one of the five current squad members who were with the club for the last success in 2006 – and clearly relished rolling back the years at Juventus Stadium on Sunday.
Looking back on an unforgettable day, Marchisio began: “The best part was the presentation of the trophy. We came onto the pitch one by one, called by our fans. Our title victory belonged to everyone, not just the players, staff and directors, but also those who work behind the scenes – they have always given this team a great boost in order to be ready for any situation.”
The midfielder, speaking exclusively to Sky Sport, was then asked to reveal the secret behind the Bianconeri’s sensational campaign.
“We won because we were hungrier. We also played a very important brand of football in every game, even when we missed several goalscoring opportunities and didn’t get the result.
“We always looked to take the game to our opponents every Sunday, both home and away. Our manager also deserves credit for this; he’s instilled the right mentality required to get back to winning ways.”
With the championship season now consigned to the record books, Juventus will push on in search of another trophy to add to the cabinet.
Antonio Conte’s men play their final game of the season on Sunday, locking horns with Napoli in a mouth-watering Coppa Italia final showdown.
“It will certainly be a difficult test,” said Marchisio. “The draw in Naples and the game we won at home were both tough encounters. The two meetings represented the two most important periods of our season. I was suspended for the first game but followed the team from the stands.
“I could see it wasn’t an easy night as we went 3-1 down. But then I saw the side’s strength, perhaps it was there that the group had even more awareness of being able to push all the way through until the end of the year.
“The return fixture came when we were in our purple patch and represented another victory. I think they were the most important moments of an extraordinary season.”
