<----the man on my avatar must be given a mention also
:weee: we had this discussion before and i have to say that scirea and baresi, not to mention der kaiser are still ahed of maldini for me. he is the ULTIMATE modern professional but not the greatest defender ever, hell i still love ciro more than paolo

From the ones i've seen, no-one comes even close to Franco Baresi.

This is coming from someone who really hates Milan so those who didn't watch Baresi can only imagine how good he was.
baresi was a god of the game and maldini has a lot to thank him for but still i loved scirea

I never got the oppurtinity to watch Baresi play live as i was 8 when he retired in 1997 but Maldini always said he was the best player he ever saw & deserved much more in terms of individual awards, not to mention that Maldini himself said he owes a great deal to him and that he learnt everything from him so i'd go for Baresi.. Mind you older Juventini i speak to would always say Scirea but theres another debate i'll leave to someone who was around then

When it comes to honors alone,Scirea beats both Maldini and Baresi. He is the amongst the unique set of players who have won every club trophy that FIFA recognizes.Let alone being sent off,Scirea was never even suspended in his entire career..which is nothing short of phenomenal for a defender. This sets up for an incredible piece of imagination for people who were too young to see Scirea - Gentile, and Scirea..two contrasting styles, yet arguably one of the greatest centre back pairings the world ever saw.

While we're on great defenders..who would you people rate higher?Cannavaro?Or Nesta? Both are probably second only to Maldini when it comes to modern day defenders.Id even say that both of them deserve to be amongst the greatest defenders the world has ever seen. Not perhaps on the same level as the likes of Baresi and co,but definatley at the next best level.

As a fan of the Azzuri, modern day defenders that have caught my eyes are Maldini, Nesta, Canna and Ferrara

    Besides them ...

Probably Colin Hendry (Scotland) & Alpay (Turkey). Not greats but definately good

:agree: no doubt.. TBH i'm seriously jealous of the generation who saw Il Ciclo Leggendario under trappatoni, it would've been such a pleasure to see the likes of Zoff, Scirea, Gentile, Cabrini, Bettega, Cuccureddu, Tardelli, Furino, Causio & later on Platini & so on to play every weekend.. Nothing would be better!

On Nesta & Cannavaro, I do rate them very highly and they are the best defenders of the last 5 or so years but surely Scirea & Baresi are on a different level.. Unfortunately i never saw either play (well not old enough to comprehend) but the r certainly legendary and are the first few names that come up whenever the greatest defender of all time is discussed, i just dont know if Canna and certainly Nesta come into that class

Along with Scirea :)toast:) and Baresi, he is probably one of the best. We can name a lot of good defenders, but Maldini is leader on the defense - like those that I named before. He is the one who shouts to make the offside play, to cover one side of the field, etc. Besides, he is a leader inside of the team. A defender, like the GK, has the option to see all the field from behind and see who is doing wrong or how in tactital terms, the opposite team is playing. The difference between a defender as a captian with the GK is the defender can go, argue with the ref, cheer up, while the GK, for some obvious reasons, can't.

So, yeah, Maldini is probably one of the best.
