It struggles because the policies involved in the managing of the team. Why do they sell Etoo to Barcelona??? why do they sell Solari, Figo and Samuel to the Inter??? why do they sell Owen ??? why do they reinforce the attack with superstars but still playing with Helguera and Pavon as Central defenders ??? why do they keep Beckham, no matter he doesnt perform ?
All this questions have the same answer: Because Florentino Perez doesnt understand football and probably never will.......

Luxemburgo is one of the most overrated managers in the game. It amazed me how some Brazilians defended Lux after he was sacked from the National Team job for Brazil, and some even defend him after this nonsense. No matter what people say...the Brazilian Championship is no where near that of Spain and when you field Robinho up top all alone instead of Baptista you deserve to be sacked, not even including losing at home to Barcelona and other sides.
But again the problems are at the top with Florentina Perez who is only insterested in the money rather than the results on the pitch...buying Beckham and selling Owen were just the beginning of his ineptness and he continues to show how much of a fool he really is with each successive transfer campaign. If I was a worthless Real supporter I would call for Perez's worthless head.

In my opinion what Real need are basically the right players...namely a solid central defender and a leader on the pitch ie Hierro (two separate players, not one).
Frank Rijkaard is IMO a mediocre manager but he has the right players, all he has to do is let them do their thing. Similarly Luxemburgo is, like Andy stated, overrated, but in a team like Real you don't need a world class manager. Just someone who can manage a couple of overblown egos and get the hunger in the team. Del Bosque was no tactician but he fit the bill.

Sacchi To Quit Real Madrid

Real Madrid have announced that Arrigo Sacchi will step down as the club's director of football at the end of December after only one year in the role.
The Italian informed the Spanish giants of his desire to return to Italy two weeks before the defeat against Barcelona in El Bernabéu.
He has cited personal reasons for wanting to move back to his native country and the club have allowed to him to resign from the position that was created especially for him.
The news was announced in Madrid's official website only a day after first team coach, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, was sacked, a decision that Sacchi was reported to have helped make.
"Sacchi said he was very happy at Real Madrid and that is why he wanted to complete a year in his post," the statement on the website read.
"But family considerations persuaded him to make this decision."
Sacchi remit when he took the post just under 12 months ago was to make the club more professionimal, but the majority of his work was behind-the-scenes, although he did have a major hand in the buying and selling of players.
