I dont understand, so they give him the funds, but they wont let him spend them on two players...he has to buy 6 or 7??
Basically, the board has had control over the players Rafa purchased in past years. Im not saying that said go buy 7 shitty players, but their influence over the transfer market has certainly hurt our ability to buy quality.

Gillett invite for DIC
Controversial move from co-owner

Last updated: 21st April 2008

Gillett and Hicks at Anfield.

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has invited senior officials from Dubai International Capital to be his guests at Anfield on Tuesday for the Champions League semi-final showdown with Chelsea.

Although Gillett himself will not be able to attend the match because of illness, his party - including son Foster, a fellow director - will be there in force to welcome DIC's representatives.

It is a remarkable move by Gillett - who has wanted to sell his 50 per cent stake in the club to DIC for several months - and comes just five days after his estranged partner Tom Hicks gave a TV interview outlining his own plans for the future of the club.

But significantly, after Hicks had made it clear he still intended to buy out Gillett, Colorado-based Gillett announced that he had no intention of ever selling his stake to Hicks.

It is believed that DIC's chief negotiator Amanda Staveley will be among Gillett's party, along with Liverpool fan and DIC chief executive Samir Al-Ansari.

Hicks to attend

Hicks could also be there, although significantly his spokesmen in the UK have been unable to confirm the Dallas billionaire's movements.

Hicks had made it clear at the weekend that he intended to be at Anfield for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final - but there are now doubts that he would want to be in the same directors box as DIC.

DIC have been trying to buy the club for 18 months, having been beaten at the post by Hicks and Gillett just over a year ago.

They seemed to have tied up a deal at the turn of the year, only for Hicks to send a representative to Dubai for talks before pulling the plug on the possible sale.

Now Gillett, at least, seems to be making a bold statement of intent. It is clear he wants to sell and that DIC want to buy.

The problem over Hicks' alleged veto of any Gillett sale is likely to be challenged in court before the summer.

Liverpool v Chelsea: Tom Hicks, George Gillett told by police to stay away

Merseyside Police have warned Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to stay away from tonight's Champions League semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Anfield over fears to their safety, according to reports.

Hicks is planning to attend the match - which will be his first appearance at Anfield since February and is scheduled to be flying into Liverpool this afternoon.

Tom Hicks will visit Anfield despite police warnings Merseyside police said today: "We can confirm that advice has been given to Liverpool Football club regarding the attendance of the club's owners, however we are not in a position to discuss any individual's safety.

A source close to Hicks confirmed that he would still be appearing tonight: "There was a discussion that was relevant to both Tom and George about the difficulties about them attending.

"But Mr Hicks decided he wanted to be at Anfield and is looking forward to the game."

Hicks will be accompanied to the match by his son, Tom Hicks Jnr, who has personal experience of the Liverpool faithful. His call in on the Sandon pub, near Anfield, after Liverpool's league victory over Middlesbrough in February sparked confrontation with fans. He had to be escorted clear by minders but later said: "I respect that some patrons have major disagreements with us, but that comes with the territory. I look forward to following up with them next time I am in Liverpool."

Both father and son are expected to sit in the front row of the directors box, near the home fans. Hicks will be coming face to face with Rick Parry, Liverpool's chief executive, whom he labeled last week as a "disaster". The American will also meet Sameer Al Ansari, chief executive of Dubai International Capital, for the first time since talks with the investment company broke down last month.

One relief for Hicks is that his partner George Gillett is understood to unable to make the match because of illness, although his son Foster will be there. The feud between the two was exacerbated last week when Hicks, during a television interview, blamed Gillett for the controversy surrounding Jurgen Klinsmann.

Rafael Benitez argued before today that his team "will not be distracted" by boardroom affairs. He said that fans "will not be thinking too much about who is in the directors' box, they will only be concerned about what we are doing on the pitch.

Liverpool always gets all my fave non-Italian players. You guys are probably getting Aimar in the summer as long as you keep Rafa since Real Zaragoza is most likely going to be relegated :sigh:

You guys are definitely the luckiest team.

Aimar played his best under Rafa and Rafa has clearly said he wants him. Rafa likes Spanish speaking players ;). Its rumored all over Spain that if Real Zaragoza is relegated( which its between Real Zaragoza and Valencia for relegation) he will be going to Liverpool. Make sense?
