Reds made to work in Kiev battle
By Paul Higham - Created on 22 Aug 06

Liverpool made it into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League with a slender 3-2 aggregate victory over Maccabi Haifa after a 1-1 draw in Kiev, although they were made to sweat in a nervy ending.

Liverpool were the main aggressors throughout and took the lead early in the second half when Peter Crouch nodded in a Jermaine Pennant cross and the 2005 European Champions looked to be cruising at 3-1 up on aggregate.

However, Roberto Colautti drew Maccabi level on the night just after the hour mark and, after offering little until then, the Israeli side then sprung into action and Liverpool had to hold on in the nervous closing stages as the clock ticked down to a place in the group stages.

The victory also came at a price as Liverpool's early season injury problems struck again as both Stephen Warnock and Mohamed Sissoko went off injured.

Despite Rafa Benitez making eight changes to the starting line-up, including Steven Gerrard starting from the bench due to a stomach bug, Liverpool settled relatively quickly and created the bulk of the chances in the first half.

Crouch sliced a snapshot wide from a good position inside the box ten minutes in, while Xabi Alonso curled a super effort just inches past the post three minutes later with Nir Davidovitch well beaten.

Davidovitch produced an instinctive block on 15 minutes when Crouch supplied Luis Garcia with a neat cut-back, allowing the Spaniard to fire first-time on goal.

Haifa could have taken the lead in the 21st minute though as Liverpool survived an almighty scare as Alain Masudi nodded in after a goal-line scramble. Gustavo Boccoli flicked on Yaniv Katan's right wing free kick but Xavier Anderson was just offside at the far post as he headed back in before Masudi nodded home.

After the let-off, Liverpool returned to the offensive but Garcia was finding Davidovitch hard to beat in the Haifa goal as he twice went close.

A firm low shot was well saved by the keeper after a great ball into the box from Alonso, while Davidovitch flew off his line to parry Garcia's header after he was found by a Crouch knockdown from a corner.

In between Liverpool suffered another injury as Warnock became their third ankle injury victim in two games as he had to be replaced by Fabio Aurelio.

Liverpool started the second period brightly and went ahead on the night when Pennant beat his man and got to the byline for the first time, and he crossed for Crouch who got in front of his marker to head home at the near post.

Mark Gonzalez could have widened the gap six minutes later when he smashed into the side netting after good link-up play by Garcia.

Just two minutes later and Haifa pulled a lifeline out of nowhere when Anderson danced through the Liverpool rearguard and, when his shot was well saved by Pepe Reina the rebound was tapped in by Colautti for 1-1 on the night and a 3-2 aggregate score.

Liverpool's injury problems struck again just after the hour when the impressive Sissoko had to be carried off with a knee injury in what was a fourth injury in two games for The Reds - and stricken skipper Gerrard had to get off his sickbed to help out his side.

With the Israeli outfit now needing just one goal to force extra time, Liverpool begun to feel the pressure and Masudi went close with a volley before Daniel Agger had to clear his lines when Reina was beaten to the ball by Boccoli.

Gerrard was showing no signs of his illness when driving his shot just wide as he looked to power his side through, but Reina had to be at his very best moments later to turn over Colautti's fine curling effort.

Haifa finally showed some desire to get forward as they searched for the crucial goal but in the end Liverpool hung on despite a nervy ending to book their spot in the group stages with a 3-2 win on aggregate.

So did Liverpool. We probably had the toughest match up of the "big" teams in this round. Rafa had said many times that maccabi was very tough. I'm glad we beat them and I don't think they deserved to go through to the next round, at least not more than my Reds. As for Crouch I could list at least a dozen forwards that I'd rather have, but alas Rafa and I are not on the same wavelength these days. I'd much rather see Bellamy up top by himself with Fowler coming off the bench.

So unfair. God I hate Liverpool so much..... since the Heysel disaster and even before that, can't stand this team, which always hurts italian sides, and now this...

Goddam cowards... pushing their influence so that they won't play in Israel. It's obvious now that if they played in Israel they would have lost and Haifa would have qualified. It's all political. They were just so lucky.
Thats bollocks and you know it. UEFA moved the match, not Liverpool. The match was moved for players safety. Who wants to play a match where the halftime show features Iranian rockets?

As for your claim of Liverpool always "hurting" Italian teams, I guess the word Always, covers one isolated incident that happened a long time ago, way before many fans were born including myself. Still we have apologized for it, even though we had nothing to do with Heysel. As for the many other cases of Liverpool "hurting" Italian teams I think you mean beating. And yes I mean beating on a pitch in a game called football.

As for us being cowards, I think you're mistaken Pool and its fans are some of the classiest in the world. Unlike yourself. It is not Liverpool's fault that Juve sucks in Europe and was demoted for cheating. Swallow you sour grapes and go place elsewhere.

But we are definitely better than Arsenal and Chelsea. Having the unluck to be born in the states I have never attended a match, so I can't speak for my fellow fans. I get pretty psyched up for games. I generally just scream GOAL!!! at the television when Fowler or Cisse touch the ball. Now that Cisse is gone I have to find a new GOAL!! man. I think the words Never Walk Alone are some damn good. As for the classiness of our fans I think we are very classy and consider myself a good example of that classiness.

You kind of have to be a fan I guess. I always look at you'll never walk alone as meaning you'll always have friends, which I don't think is depressing.

I hope I get that game on the tube, but I doubt we play our best team. I want to see Walcott play. Think he will?

theo walcott? no offence, but i think he's vastly overrated, looks like an english version of martins to me, for him to have gone to the world cup without playing a min of premiership football was ludacrus, i saw theo play last year for southampton against watford, totally marked out of the game.

I've never seen him play, I just heard he was a good youngster with great speed. He's kind of like England's Fredi Adu I guess.

he has speed, but no end product, he wudnt make it in a league like italy, or spain, as for england, not too sure, he played for a few mins over the weekend made 1 half decent cross that was flicked on for a goal, and now theres mass hype about him already, which i cant stand for any player who does 1 little spark of magic, without playing consistantly, let alone at all.

The should send him to the MLS and let him and Fredi go at it. That way we can know who has the best player never to do anything.

I refer you to the days before UEFA's decision. Liverpool announced that there was no way they'll come to Israel, even though UEFA did not even consider to ban games from Israel. Furthemore, even the head of Liverpool "fans" said that there was no way he'll come - that means he's a coward, no class or nothing. What's so classy about yelling "you will never walk alone" in a pitch which makes your ear bleed while bring drunk from beer and stabbing people... yes, this brings us to Heysel - nothing to do with it ??? Liverpool fans broke the wall down on innocent people and continued to stab them while they were on the ground. Liverpool should have never been introduced to europe again.

Yes, they did beat on the pitch many italian teams, which I hate them too for that reason, my prerogative :)

About the security issue, without getting into politics, no rockets were ever fired into Tel Aviv, which is where the game would be in the first place. Secondly, no rockets were fired since the ceasefire which came in the beginning of last week ! Let me ask you - will liverpool have agreed to come to Eilat ? How is England a safer place anyway with the IRA bombings, the bombing of the londron trains by Al Qaida etc ?

A big team like liverpool shouldn't be afraid of a team like Haifa... suddenly Haifa is such a strong opponent ? What a loser attitude is that that you need to exploit excuses to give you an advantage ? Liverpool even refused to play in cyprus which would have been closer for Haifa. Why not play two matches in liverpool and that's it ?

Are you familiar with the notion of fair play ? If it's a neutral ground, play two matches in a netural ground, and let UEFA decide for themselves without influencing the board, and threatening not to adhere to their decisions.

If it was this close when Haifa played two away games, then obviously Liverpool didn't deserve to go through.

If you think Juve sucks in europe, and you admire their murderous arch rivals instead, well I have to say I'm surprised . I thought you were simply supporting both teams for some odd reason.

i agree with mnementh.

It would've been different if maccabi played at home. They were disadvantaged by playing in neutral.

Anyway it would've put a big smile on a friend of mine if liverpool didnt make it.
I would say on my face as well.

But its good to see the big teams go through. The more competitave the better.
