Brazilian star Fabio Aurelio is expected to seal his move to Liverpool this weekend.

The 26-year-old's contract with Valencia expires on Friday and, having rejected the offer of an extension, he is due to travel to England over the weekend to put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal at Anfield.

A left back who can also operate in midfield, Aurelio has long been a target of Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez who coached the player when the two were at Valencia.

Aurelio won both La Liga and the Uefa Cup under Benitez's stewardship at La Mestalla and the Reds chief is well aware of his quality.

The South American will increase competition down the Liverpool left flank where he will do battle with the likes of John Arne Riise and Stephen Warnock for a place.

He will become the Merseysiders' second signing of the summer following the capture of Craig Bellamy, although Argentine defender Gabriel Palleta is another imminent arrival.

Aurelio joined Valencia in the 2000-01 campaign and while he impressed during his time in Spain, injury prevented him from ever truly cementing a first-team berth.

Meanwhile, Liverpool misfit Bruno Cheyrou could be set for a move Rennes.

Cheyrou spent last season on loan at Bordeaux but they opted against making the move permanent.

However, Rennes could ensure the player is back in France next season having confirmed their interest in the 28-year-old.

"An agreement could be found before the end of the week," stated Rennes general manager Pierre Dreossi.

Reds complete deal for Argentine

Liverpool have completed the formalities of Gabriel Paletta's switch to Anfield.

The 20-year-old Argentine, who joins The Reds from Banfield, put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract to end Rafa Benitez's pursuit of the player.

Paletta agreed a deal with Liverpool last February, with the transfer awaiting the rubberstamp this summer.

Benitez beat off stiff competition to land the player, who the Spaniard believes has all the hallmarks of a budding Roberto Ayala.

"Paletta is very tough and he's exactly the sort of player we need who will suit The Premiership," Benitez told the club's official website.

"When you talk about the Argentinian defenders I worked with in Valencia, Paletta is more like Ayala than Pellegrino.

"If you're talking about Liverpool, he's more like Carragher than Sami Hyypia. This is good because we will have a balance in the style of defenders.

"He is a defender with a lot of aggression and we're sure he has a great future. He will learn a lot here, like Daniel Agger, and provide competitiveness in our defence."

Benitez admits Liverpool had to act quickly to sign Paletta, with River Plate registering a firm interest earlier in the year.

"He has attracted a lot of interest from top clubs in Argentina like River Plate and Boca Juniors. River Plate even reserved a number six shirt for him, so we had to move quickly to sign him. We're delighted to have done the deal now," added Benitez.

Reds look at Greek ace

Liverpool are believed to have handed a trial to Greek striker Lazaros Christodoupoulos.

Reports emanating from Greece suggest Liverpool have invited the PAOK Saloniki ace over to Anfield for a trial.

The 20-year-old has not travelled with the rest of the PAOK squad for their pre-season trip to France fuelling speculation that he is on his way to Merseyside.

Christodoupoulos is regarded as one of the best young players in Greece and he enjoyed a fine season last term with PAOK.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has been alerted to Christodoupoulos by his network of scouts.

Benitez is keen to bolster his squad ahead of the new season and will cast an eye over Christodoupoulos in training this week.

Christodoupoulos, who has three years left on his contract at PAOK, has a release clause of €200,000 (£136,000) and if he impresses during his training stint at Anfield, Liverpool could decide to activate the clause.

If we can get past Sevilla's manager with the initial fee, Alves already said he wants to play for Rafa. So the chances are pretty good. But then again you never know.

Reds to snap up Greek ace

Liverpool trialist Lazaros Christodoulopoulos is set to sign a three-year contract, according to Greek sources.

We revealed on Monday that Christodoulopoulos was on trial at Anfield, but he has obviously wasted little time in impressing.

Greek reports now claim that Christodoupoulos has agreed a three-year contract with The Reds and he has already passed a medical.

Christodoupoulos was spotted by Liverpool's new chief scout Eduardo Macia playing for PAOK Salonika and coach Rafa Benitez has obviously been sufficiently impressed by the 20-year-old.

Christodoupoulos has a get-out clause of just over £130,000 so Liverpool have no doubt decided that the risk in taking on the young striker for such a nominal fee is not a big one.

Pennant in Reds medical

Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant is reportedly undergoing a medical at Liverpool ahead of his proposed £6.2 million move to the Premiership side.

Widespread reports indicated on Wednesday morning that The Reds were close to tying up a deal for the former Arsenal man, and if Pennant passes the examination and agrees personal terms then he could fly out to join Rafa Benitez's side in Switzerland.

Blues boss Steve Bruce admitted on Tuesday that the Championship side had turned down a bid of £3.5 million for the player who first burst into the national consciousness when signing for Arsenal from Notts County in a record deal as a 15-year-old.

A subsequent offer of £6.2 million may have been enough to prise Pennant from St Andrews, and the 23-year-old will now join The Reds for pre-season training should he pass his medical at Melwood.

The winger could now make his debut for the club against German outfit Kaiserslautern on Saturday, whilst Benitez has also moved to secure the future of fellow wide-man Paul Anderson.

The 18-year-old, signed from Hull City in January, has impressed the Spanish boss during pre-season and has been rewarded with a new-four year contract at Anfield.

Anderson will now look to break into the first team picture under Benitez and joins goalkeeper Scott Carson in committing his future to the club.

Concern over Liverpool tie

Uefa have reassured Liverpool that players, fans and officials will not be put at any risk as they face the prospect of a trip to Israel to face Maccabi Haifa in a UEFA Champions League qualifier.

Liverpool face the less than enviable prospect of visiting Maccabi, with a home first leg on August 8 or 9, followed by a return in Israel two weeks later.

Uefa official Rob Faulkner has moved to allay any fears the competition winners of 2005 may currently hold, with a back-up plan of playing the second leg in Cyprus already in place.

''We'll be in discussions with both of the clubs but obviously key is the safety of players, fans and officials,'' he told Sky Sports News.

''We wouldn't take those decisions without 100 percent assurances and that's the information we are asking for at the moment.

''We've played matches away from Israel quite successfully in the past and that is the plan B, the action plan.

''It's something we can't answer for the moment obviously. Once Maccabi were in the draw we were aware of the situation and we monitor these things very closely.

''We've asked the Israel FA and the relevant authorities to provide us with assurances and we have to keep monitoring that and we've asked them to give us those as soon as possible.

''At the moment as it stands any matches that take place in Israel are played in the south - in the Tel Aviv area - but we're waiting for more information from the Israel FA before we can make any more decisions.''

While Uefa are considering the option of playing the game away from Israel, Maccabi president Jacob Shachar is optimistic the game will go ahead in his homeland.

"Tel Aviv is quiet - let's hope things will stay quiet and we will be able to host Liverpool,'' he told Sky Sports News.

"It's an unpleasant situation although we understand Liverpool's concerns.

"We lost the chance to play Liverpool years ago when we were suspended - and I am glad we can play this game.

"Liverpool have many supporters in Israel and one of their former players, Ronnie Rosenthal, played for Maccabi Haifa."

Liverpool secretary Bryce Morrison admits that the Premiership club would prefer to move the game away from Israel altogether, also of the opinion that Cyprus is not a suitable alternative.

"We have concerns over this situation - obviously it's not the safest place in the world to travel to.

"From the information given we'll be making more investigations - but it's very early days yet.

"I don't think Cyprus is an option at the moment due to the number of people from Lebanon who are there at the moment.

"We'd prefer it to be played at a neutral ground somewhere else."

Rafa calls on Uefa switch

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has hit at the prospect of his side being forced to play their UEFA Champions League qualifier with Maccabi Hafia in Israel.

The Reds were drawn to face Maccabi Haifa in the third qualifying round on Friday and the tie has raised fears over security.

Benitez is unhappy that his side may be forced to travel to Israel in August for the second leg of the tie even though there is unrest in the country.

"It's a crazy situation and totally unacceptable to even think about us going over there at this time," fumed Benitez.

"A few years back, when I was with Valencia, we were drawn to play Maccabi Haifa in a Uefa Cup tie and the match was switched to Cyprus. The situation then was nowhere near as bad as it is now.

"Valencia also had a European game in the Ukraine on the day the Twin Towers were attacked in America and I can remember the confusion that caused with the players on their mobile phones constantly to their families who were wondering when we'd be getting back.

"It's impossible to prepare for a game in these circumstances.

"There is no way we should be going to Israel to play a game of football at this time. It's crazy to even consider it. Uefa cannot put anyone at risk.

"The situation is very clear in my mind. I feel sad for the people over there at the moment because it's a terrible time for them, but we have to put the security and safety of everyone involved before anything else and that means we cannot travel there. It would be impossible to concentrate on the game.

"Uefa need to make a decision quickly because there will be lots of our supporters wanting to know what is happening."
