ALONSO LIFTS REDS TO NEW HEIGHTS
Xabi Alonso gave a masterclass of passing as he returned from injury in style creating both goals in the 2-0 win at Sunderland that lifted Liverpool to fourth place in the Premiership table.
Alonso had missed the two previous games with a knee problem but having fully recovered he and Steven Gerrard were just too good for Sunderland on the night.
Alonso's passes for both goals were exquisite bordering on sheer poetry in motion. They were the kind of passes defenders hate and in fairness to Sunderland's defence you just can't defend against passes of that quality.
The first assist for Luis Garcia's goal was Kenny Dalglish, Jan Molby esque as he produced a sharp turn and didn't even need to look to pick out his compatriot. The run from Garcia was brilliant and the finish was cool and composed.
The second goal was pure class. Gerrard made the run and Alonso picked him out perfectly and the captain did the rest. Gerrard is now joint top scorer with Djibril Cisse on 11 goals this season and he will almost certainly better his best ever total in a red shirt which was 13 last season.
One media organisation reporting on this match suggested the pass from Alonso for the first goal was a hopeful long punt! All you can say to that is it's laughable bordering on the insulting and outrageous, but Liverpool fans and manager Rafael Benitez know the score so that's all that matters.
Liverpool played some good football on the night and apart from a late chance for Jon Stead defensively the Reds were brilliant once again.
Peter Crouch still continues to search for that elusive first goal but he again had a very good match and lead the line well. He should have had a blatant penalty too early in the second half but he hasn't had much luck in front of goal so far.
Rafa's men have now leapfrogged Bolton, Tottenham and Wigan in the table after extending their impressive unbeaten run to seven games and they now haven't conceded a goal in 630 minutes of football. With Wigan due in L4 on Saturday lunchtime the Reds know three points will take them up to second place in the Premiership and what a great incentive that is.
Reflecting on another win Benitez said: "The team is playing well. We are controlling games and showing consistency, scoring goals and keeping clean sheets. We need to keep this run going now and to do that we have continue doing the same things.
"The one area we need to improve on is finishing the game off. We could have done with a third goal tonight because without it the end of this match was difficult. Thankfully, our defence did a good job."
Benitez was full of praise for man-of-the-match Xabi Alonso and added: "Xabi is a player who can pass and keep possession. He is probably one of the best passers in the world and played very well for us tonight."
The only blemish on the night for Liverpool was the sending-off of Momo Sissoko for two yellow card offences and Benitez hopes the incident will be a learning curve for the Mali international.
Benitez said: "Losing Momo made life difficult for us and he has to learn. I was talking to him throughout the game, telling him to be careful with his tackling."
Aside from the sending-off it was another good night for Liverpool and onwards and upwards we go marching up the Premiership table to greater heights.
