A bit of both - obvious if you play a very strong positional game, the chances of getting scored on are much lower, but sometimes remarkable players do impressive things even with good positional play. Strong positional play ensures that it happens very rarely, but there are times when a player will make a slight mistake, or a great player will do something remarkable that even the best defenders will have trouble dealing with. It's not black and white. At least that's how I think of it.
You cant expect a defender of equal level as the attacker to get the best of him every time. I agreee with that but rarely are you up against a player that is the exact level as you. Do you expect to keep a player like Suarez out of the goal all the time? Usually no. What about some average serie a striker? Yes you do. In my mind we have the best defense in europe and I think that Bonucci is one of the best. Am I going to blame him for letting a goal in every once in a while against Suarez? no But also just because Suarez gets the best of players doesnt mean it cant be stopped. If Bonucci would have had one better step he would have been able to make a play. You see guys like Maldini in his prime and he completely owned the player almost every time. In his perfect games the player he marked was invisable.
Sandro was pretty damn close to that yesterday. No player really ever got the best of him and Messi drifted away because of that. No one would blame Sandro if Messi did best him once or twice

He has come up leaps and bounds since 2010-11. He may not be flawless like Barzagli or possess the ruggedness and sheer strength of Chiellini but his distribution is impeccable and he is an all round solid defender most of the time.
That's just it, he's just a solid defender, nothing more, nothing less. I expect us to have better than just solid. I prefer my defenders to be great defenders first and foremost. I mean, any time he was asked to show some great one on one defending vs barca he made a mess of it.

Exactly its like people are unaware of the fact he was up against best attackers in the world last night. It wasnt his greatest match but he did fine
Chielini was up against the same people, did you see how he fared?

Yes. That is why he is receiving exceptional praise and people are claiming it was one of his best games in years

He was all over the place in the first couple of minutes but got into the game afterwards. @Klin :dule:

He was freaking awesome. Only second to Chiellini IMO.
