Category: Match Reports

At the Olimpico, Capello lines up Blasi in the midfield in place of Emerson and Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet in attack, while Lazio’s attacking pair are Di Canio and recovered Rocchi. In the first few minutes, the most active man on the Biancoazzurri’s side is Oddo: the back’s first action occurs on 3’ minutes with a cross from the right the with a free kick that ends high over the crossbar. Juventus hits back with Ibrahimovic’s right-footed kick from the edge of the box which is stopped by Peruzzi and then with a tricky left-footed shot by Zambrotta that is narrowly wide of target. The game is not very emotional until 16’ minutes, when Thuram loses the ball in the box and Manfredini serves it for Rocchi who can beat Abbiati (1-0). Three minutes later, it’s Oddo again who attempt on goal but his right-footed kick from the edge of the penalty area gets out. Juve try to fight back on 21’ minutes with Vieira’s long-range finish which ends high over the bar. The draw is finally achieved five minutes later: Camoranesi takes a free kick from the right, Nedved overcomes Peruzzi with a header and Trezeguet, again with a header, shoots the ball in from a two-steps range (1-1). The game is often interrupted by minor but frequent fouls and the show suffers from that. The only occasion worth noting after the draw goal occurs on 45’ minutes when Chiellini shoots at goal with a left-footed kick but Peruzzi succeed in deflecting it for a corner.

The second half too is opened by Chiellini’s initiative when, after 2 minutes, he kicks Camoranesi’s cross from the flag high over the bar. On 9’ minutes Ibrahimovic controls well a difficult ball from Chiellini and shoots at goal with a right-footed kick which unfortunately misses the target and two minutes later he invents a precious pass to Trezeguet who sprints from a regular position and shoots on goal but Peruzzi successfully deflects the ball for a corner. The second half time seems to replay the first half: much struggling into the midfield, discontinuous game and few occasions: on 25’ minutes, Nedved gets Ibrahimovic started, the latter tries a left-footed shot but it ends out. Three minutes later, Trezeguet starts a counterattack from the right flank and passes the ball to the centre for Ibrahimovic, who is anticipated in the corner. Lazio hit back first with Tare and then with Manfredini who, both with headers, cannot find the goal. On 35’ minutes, Capello makes his first substitution, sending Del Piero in to replace Trezeguet and two minutes later Zalayeta in place of Camoranesi. Juventus start growing: on 40’ minutes, Zalayeta moves along the right flank and puts the ball in, Peruzzi gets out of the area but cannot grab the ball, caught by Nedved who ends up being anticipated before being able to shoot at goal. Pavel tries again on 42’ minutes but his right-footed shot is punched back by Peruzzi.
In the final minutes, Lazio try to get dangerous with Pandev and Liverani but Abbiati keeps good guard. It ends 1-1.
