Historically, the Bianconeri have not had great success in Coppa Italia matches against Lazio in Rome. The record stands at four losses, four draws and two wins. However, Lazio looked out of sorts against Juventus in mid-week and come into this match off a 1-0 home defeat to Chievo.
These are the results of previous clashes between the sides:
1958 (L) – 14 September, the first Coppa Italia clash in Rome, the Biancocelesti ran out 2-0 winners thanks to second-half goals from from Tozzi and Fumagalli.
1974 (D) – A goalless draw at the Stadio Olimipco, Juve finished one point off qualification for the final.
1983 (D) –Boniek scored in his own net for the Bianconeri but Cabrini equalised barely a minute later with a headed effort to seal a 1-1 draw.
1987 (W) – After a 0-0 draw in Turin in the first leg, Juve celebrated a two goal win in the capital which saw them progress to the quarter-final stage of the competition. Buso and Serena both netted for the away side in the second-half.
1987 (D) – The result of four years ago repeated itself, another 1-1 draw. Galdersi put the hosts in front after just two minutes but then Mauro drew level for the Bianconeri in the second period. The tie went to a penalty shootout in which Juventus prevailed 4-2.
1995 (W) – Juve were leading 1-0 from the first leg of the semi-final. However, an own goal from Sousa brought Lazio right back into the tie. Juventus managed to hold their nerve with two goals after the interval from Ravanelli and Baggio. The Bianconeri went on to lift the trophy and record their most recent victory in the competition.
1998 (D) – The situation was similar to this year’s. Juve travelled to Rome after a disappointing result in Turin. Fonseca put Lazio in a comfortable position in the tie with his goal in the first-half, but then Nedved scored two goals in five minutes after the break to set the away side on course. However, an own goal from Favalli in injury time denied the Bianconeri a spot in the final.
2000 (L) – Boksic put the hosts in front, but Del Piero put Juventus back in line for progression to the semis. However, a late goal from Simeone saw the Biancocelesti progress to the semi-final on the away goal rule.
2004 (L) – It was a painful defeat, a final over two legs. In the capital, Lazio established a two-goal lead in the tie with a double from Fiore in the last third of the match which left Juventus a mountain to climb in Turin.
2009 (L) – Semi-final, first leg. Marchionni put the visitors in front after 34 minutes, but Pandev and Rocchi hit back in the second-half. The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow as Iaquinta saw a goal wrongly disallowed due to offside.
The Bianconeri have not won away against Lazio in the Coppa Italia in their last four attempts and will be looking to remedy that statistic in tomorrow evening’s semi-final. The visitors will need victory or a high scoring draw to secure a return to the Stadio Olimpico for the final in May for the second consecutive year.
