Here’s the idea: We all watch a lot of movies, some good some bad. Some of us have similar tastes so I’ve come up with this idea: If you watch a movie and deem it at least a 7/10 then post it in here. Just post once and then edit that post every time you add another movie. So for instance, if vlatko likes Jack’s taste in movies, all he has to do is to check what movie JCK watched and what rating he gave it. Ratings can be given using the stars we have and a brief plot is certainly helpful.

PS: Any movie you think rates less than 7/10 can be posted in the regular movie thread.

The Other Boleyn Girl

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: 7/10

Not the best of movies to start with but I thought it was pretty good. Tells the story of King Henry VIII and his obsession with getting a male heir. Even though women and sex play a huge role in the movie, I was disapointed to see so little skin. Especially since both Scarlett and Natalie are in it. :p Eric Bana playing the king BTW.

Good idea, Tahir. :tup:

This Is England

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: 8/10

How's that for brainwashing? :D Excellent film really, shows how troubled youth is easily manipulated. Also, sheds a new perspective on the skinhead subculture and how it's not necesseraly racist-oriented. The first skins were both black & white and were actually influenced by black music like reggae. I loved how it was filmed with lots of "grain" to better accentuate the time of the story.

Dazed And Confused

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: 8/10

Salman, you outta see this. :D Set in 1976, tells a story about kids and last day of school. Lots of drugs, booze and good ol' rock n' roll. Man, how I wish I lived in that age..

    Kautokeino-opprøret (The Kautokeino Rebellion)

    :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star: 8/10

    A brilliantly told story about the challenges the Sami population of Scandinavia (indigenous population) had to endure as a result of the forced integration policy of Norway and the only time they physically clashed with the colonizers.

    L'Albero Degli Zoccoli

    :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star: :star: 9/10

    My description wouldn't do it justice so...:

    If there were any reason for dropping out of normal life and dedicating oneself entirely to watching Italian films, this might be it! The majestic simplicity and dignity of this film make even the best contemporary films seem trivial and stillborn by comparison. Loved by sensitive audiences and critics alike, Ermanno Olmi's movie describes incidents in the lives of four families sharecropping in Lombardy at the coming of the twentieth century. Olmi's extraordinary command of imagery, movement, rhythm, and lighting conveys a potent nostalgia for Earth and the family of man. There is a scene in which images of a father carving clogs for his shoeless boy are intercut with the lives of the farm families. The music accompanying that scene is a Bach organ chorale. The effect is almost sacramental and entirely overwhelming and may be one of my favorite scenes in all cinema. That scene alone is worth more than all the digitalized special effects, car crashes, ocean liner sinkings, and the deafening Dolby vapidity of so much of the inane junk embraced undiscriminatingly by so many. If they only had the eyes to see, ears to hear, and the soul to love this wondrous work of art!

    Ramchand Pakistani

    :star::star::star::star::star::star::star: 7/10

    Pretty good movie I must say. Almost lived up to its hype I'd say. My only problem with it is that it seemed to be going no where at times and there side stories that didn't really fit in with the main plot. Otherwise, it's a very good beginning to Indo-Pak film.

    A Clockwork Orange
    (Dir: Stanley Kubrick, 1972)

    9/10 :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star:

    Based on Anthony Burgess, A clockwork Orange shows the ultra-violence between a group of adolescents who consumes drugs mixed with milk and some other stuff... But the real reason why I loved it is because Kubrick saw (kind of a visionary) who the youth would be: 1975 the UK exploited with the Sex Pistols. Have you seen how punks and Alex De Large are related? Ultra violence, destruction of classic values, anti-moral (Nietzsche). Then, after Alex brainwash, Kubrick put us in the wonder "who is the monster here? this rebel young man who has been influenced by all the terrible things in the world such as violence, wars, injustice, etc or the same society which all his members are essentially evil?". Wonderful, IMO.

    Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten (Dir: Julien Temple, 2007)

    10/10 :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star: :star: :star:

    I have to be honest: maybe this is biased. Joe Strummer have a special meaning in my life with all he said and did. I'm pretty sure that if I never heard The Clash I wouldn't be who I'm right now. Strummer, with his lyrics, made me realize the other reality that is outside of our burble. It's a really well made documentary, with all Joe Strummer's old friend talking around a bonfire talking about Joe and his story, with some B sides of The Clash song's, and some important artist are invited too such a Flea, Bono, Johnny Deep and some others.. It's really touching for the ones who feel The Clash (sounds really cliche, but that the way it is). I always cry with this documentary.

    Cinema Paradiso (Dir: Giuseppe Tornatore, 1988)

    8/10 :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star:

    I think that this is one of the first movies that made me cry so much. I remember that I saw it when I was 5-6 years old. I used to watch with my grandfather who talked to me about those old cinema's. It's a really touching movie with an awesome soundtrack made by Ennio Morricone. It gives you a different view of movies away from the Hollywood mainstream.

    Trainspotting
    (Dir: Danny Boyle, 1996)

    8/10 :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star:

    Based on a Irvine Welsh novel (who also did a cameo in the movie) show us one of the biggest question of life: choose one. Mark Renton decides he doesn't want to choose life, why he has to do that to reach happiness (which according with Aristotle is what we are looking for). Renton decides to stay apart of all this things that are supposed to bring you happiness: cars, a big television, childrens, money... he decides to live as a heroin addict and his life goes around a needle. He found his conscience, Diane, a young girl who make him realize that all is chaining : drugs, music, people, etc, so Renton decides to choose a life... I don't want to spoil the end :D

    There will be blood - 8/10

    Great movie, superb acting by DDL as always (Oscar winning performance)
    only weakness is that its sometimes boring because its too long.

    The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - 8/10

    Absolutely fantastic Character development. This is by far Brad's Best performance. Its better than his performance in Benjamin Button. Also, Casey Afleck is doing a superb role. This movie is a lesson for every actor.
    Again, its only weakness that its sometimes boring as its too long.

    Gone Baby Gone - 7/10

    It Starts as a regular kidnapper hunt, but as the ending gets closer it gets really intense and closes with one hell of a moral dilemma. Acting is good. Ed Harris stands as the best. Overall, its definitely worth the watch.

    PI - 8/10

    Darren Aranovski is one sick Mofo when it comes to movie making. This movies' budget was 60,000$ ONLY and you'll be surprised how good it is.
    Its about a Mathematician who explains nature is mathematical functions and diagrams. He gets obsessed with finding a Math Equation that explains the whole world.
    Watch it. Its brilliant.

    The Fountain - 9/10

    Another Darren Aranovski movie with so much meaning that it is impossible to summarize. Its mostly about life & death incorporated in a fantasy he creates. This is the hardest movie I have ever seen in terms of explaining its meaning.
    Watch it and it will give you a week of thinking.

    Requiem of a Dream - 10/10

    This movie has the most effective cinema I've ever seen. Darren Aranovski is my new favorite director & writer. Its about the lives of 2 young adults and a mother, each indulging in their own way of drug addiction. I cant believe i didn't see this movie a long time ago.

    Waking Life - 9/10

    A movie for philosophy minded folks. Its not a regular movie in any sense. It talks about a huge number of philosophical perspectives about reality. If you are a thinker this is a must see movie.
    The events take place inside a man's dream where he realizes that he is dreaming IN the dream. He meets with a lot of people he don't know and each give him a different perspective about the human consciousness & reality.
    This Movie will make you feel you are dreaming and will change your dreams forever.

    2012 = -2/10

    Plot: based on the Mayan prediction that the Earth will end on 21-12-2012. Pathetic plot, a lot of explosions and SFX, overacting and John friggin' Cusack as an action hero?! :lol:

    Absolutely dreadful! I can't even talk about it. Not funny, long, rubbish, uninteresting and makes you shed tears on the money you spent for a ticket to see this "torture".

    Public Enemies (2009) (Johhny Depp, Christian Bale)

    8/10 :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

    One of the best movies of 2009. A contender for more than one academy award. A true story about American bank robber John Dillinger during the great depression who robbed more than two dozen banks and four police stations making him America's most wanted. Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger while Christian Bale plays Melvin Purvis, FBI agent who was appointed to hunt the man and his gang down. Johnny Depp's performance was amazing and certainly deserves the oscar for best actor this time. Christian Bale also, as usual, gives a powerful performance. Stephan Lang, who was featured in the last 15 minutes or so of the movie, deserves a mention too.

    Great movie.

    The Hurt Locker (2009) (Jeremy Renner)

    9/10 :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

    The best war thriller since a very long time. Directed by a lady called Kathryn Bigelow! The movie is about the united states army EOD team who specializes in bomb disposal during the Iraqi war. The directing was absolutely amazing. Intense and thrilling from the beginning until the end. The movie isn't a political one, it's a humanitarian movie that shows the horror life of both Iraqis and US army during the war. The movie starts with a quote: "The rush of battle is a potent and often lethal addiction, for war is a drug". Either you like war movies or hate it, you'll definitely love this one. Jeremy Renner performance was near perfect. A new star on the rise.

    A masterpiece.

    Where the Wild Things Are(2009):

    9/10 :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star: :star:

    (could be construed as spoilers)

    The basic premise of the film is that there is a child called Max who has difficulty communicating with adults and other children acts out and misbehaves and ends of running away from his house and goes on a fantasy adventure in which he travels by boat to where the wild things are. The different 'wild things' represent a negative fascet of childhood or of parts of his life and he become there king. The big issue with the film is that critics have taken it to be a film marketed towards children and Spike Jonze has continually stated that the film wasn't made as a film for children. The reason this has become a big problem is that there is a scene in which the 'wild things' threaten to eat him and he finds bones of who presumes are previous 'kings'. What has been misunderstood is that it is a film about 'childhood' and is has been taken as a childrens film. It would take a special person to not be touched by this film or be able to empaphise with the 'wild things' in nostalgia of their own childhoods. The 'wild things' arent cgi they were puppets and the only cgi in the film was to airbrush the puppets and for when stunts are taking place. Its one of the best films released this year and i would recomend it to anyone and everyone. Enjoy
