I'm not really blaming Pirlo for playing Berna at LB. The blame for this goes elsewhere, towards the people who made sure that we'll have Frabotta when Sandro isn't available. In Pirlo's place I'd also improvise. The choice today was Frabotta or Bernardeschi - same shit.
And iirc it's not the first time this season when both Sandro and Cuadrado were unavailable, forcing us to play Danilo on the right and leaving us with terrible choices at LB. This is a problem we'll face even more next year when Sandro and Cuadrado will be a year older and most probably more injury prone. We're desperate for midfielders, but the full-back position is another huge worry.
