Teams score from crosses all the time, man. Against the best defenders in the world. Not every time is the defender going to be able get up and intercept the cross. Especially when zonal marking and not man marking. He was in a good spot, the cross is an inch or two lower he gets it, a couple inches higher and the Lazio player doesn't get it to put it in. Sometimes crosses are sent in perfectly, like that one.
For a team to score there has to be a mistake somewhere. Of course teams let in goals from crosses, it doesn't take away that it is another example of Bonucci misjudging the ball on the cross (for the second time in the match). It was a superb cross and should have been blocked before coming into the box but if he reads it the goal is avoided.

It is a worrying trend at how often Bonucci makes these errors and it costs us.

Back post crosses will rape us forever.

It's because the fullback can't pinch inside as much as he wants to help the CB. If you have wide midfielders, they can take some responsibility at the very back post and the fullback can come inside more. But the way we are now, the fullback has to worry about too many threats and can't concentrate fully on helping the CB.

You can see this problem on almost every cross.
Maybe we could try a back post cross in our attacking... if only we had a player that thrived in that situation... oh wait...

Pjanic is man marked in our half and his marker is giving him more space only once we pass on their half. That's very annoying, and Pirlo was a victim of such man marking many times. But back then it opened more space for Pogba, Vidal and Marchisio. Now it's opening space for Matuidi, Can and Bernanrdeschi :(
Agree. And when you put Can in that mid a recipe for a disaster.

This is the give and take of zonal marking. Bonucci looks better this year with Sarri's system where the CB just watches the ball because that's all he does anyway. In the past, if you ask him to track a striker he will never track them. Never look over his shoulder like Chiellini would. So in a zonal system we just take that responsibility from him.

I think these goals are always going to be more of a collective failure because the benefit of the zonal marking is that everyone sees the threat at the same time. You are not just relying on Bonucci to mark the attacker because we know he struggles at that. For example Matuidi could have tracked better or Alex Sandro could have jumped into the situation as well.

And Berna, who had Cuads behind him for backup, still feel for the dummy and gave Luis Alberto way too much space to put the cross in.
