The title of ‘Winter Champions’ is always important. And Juventus are back to celebrating this particular accolade for the first time in six years. Fabio Capello was the last Bianconeri manager to do so, with his title winning 2006 side topping the table at the end of the first half of the season.
Antonio Conte has reached an important target which, in the past, has been achieved by many illustrious predecessors. Last night’s 2-0 win in Bergamo means that Juventus are first at the midway point of the campaign for the 25th time in the club’s history.
As far as the previous 24 occasions are concerned, 18 of these have seen the Bianconeri maintain their lead and clinch title success. Juventus lifted the Scudetto in the following seasons: 1930/31, 1932/33, 1949/50, 1951/52, 1957/58, 1959/60, 1971/72, 1972/73, 1974/75, 1976/77, 1977/78, 1983/84, 1985/86, 1994/95, 1996/97, 1997/98, 2004/05 and 2005/06.
Instead, the team lost their grip at the top of the table on the other six occasions: 1935/36, 1946/47, 1953/54, 1962/63, 1975/76 and 1999/00.
This signals another important achievement for Juventus, which comes just a week after Conte’s men broke a record dating back 62 years. Yesterday’s victory extended the club's unbeaten run to 19 consecutive games.
