25 August 2002 to 25 August 2012. Tonight's meeting between Juventus and Parma falls on the tenth anniversary of a previous encounter, and an important one in Bianconeri history. Ten years ago to the day these two sides locked horns in Tripoli, Libya, as they contended the Italian Super Cup.
Marcello Lippi's team, having clinched the Scudetto on 5 May, were up against Coppa Italia winners Parma, under new stewardship in the shape of Cesare Prandelli. Much like in Beijing this year, the 2002 Super Cup provided Juventus with an opportunity to avenge their cup final defeat from a few months earlier. An opportunity too good to miss for Buffon and Co. The Bianconeri emerged as 2-1 victors, Alessandro Del Piero netting twice and Marco Di Vaio on target for Parma just days before he completed his move to Turin.
That triumph in Tripoli was Juventus' third Italian Super Cup success (the first, in 1996, also came at the expense of Parma), and it was achieved by a team chock-a-block with Bianconeri legends: Del Piero, Buffon, Nedved, Pessotto, Montero, Trezeguet, Camoranesi, Ferrara and Tacchinardi.
