Juventus boast a good Coppa Italia record against Napoli, having gone undefeated in the last six meetings between the sides.
Only two wins have been registered by the Partenopei: 2-1 in 1937 and 5-0 in 1978.
An element of pride, however, was restored following the heavy defeat in 1978, with the Bianconeri emerging victorious in the second leg thanks to a rare goal from defender Spinosi.
Both teams were next pitted against each other in the 1999/00 campaign. Juventus enjoyed the better of the affair in Naples, with Inzaghi and a Kovacevic double confirming their dominance in a 3-1 success. Another victory then followed in the return leg. This time Esnaider was the match winner, netting one of his two goals scored during a brief spell in Turin.
In the summer of 2006, Napoli and Juventus, back then plying their trade in Serie B, played out an absorbing affair at the San Paolo. The ninety minutes ended with the scores locked at 2-2 following strikes from Chiellini, Bucci, Cucchi and Del Piero. The captain put the visitors ahead in extra time before Cannavaro’s equaliser sent the game to penalties. After 12 kicks, Napoli eventually progressed through after Balzaretti sent his attempt over the bar.
Penalties were also required to separate the sides at the Stadio Olimpico in 2009. After seeing a perfectly legitimate Trezeguet goal ruled out, the Bianconeri eventually gained their just reward by prevailing on spot kicks. Gargano and Contini fluffed their lines from twelve yards to set up a quarter-final clash with Inter.
The last Coppa Italia encounter with the Partenopei was contested on 13 January 2010 in Turin. Ciro Ferrara’s side cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Walter Mazzarri’s men. Diego added to Del Piero’s double to see Juve safely through to the next round.
