Juventus and Catania didn’t face each other many times in championship games, however the hosts collected 7 wins, 4 draws and just 2 defeats. The small amount of 13 matches is the result of the long time periods which saw the Sicilians relegated far from spotlight.
The first clash occurred in 1954/55 season and finished with a 1-1 draw, with Spinofski and Bronée on the scoresheet. The first success for the Bianconeri took place on 16 October 1960: they overcame their opponents 4-1, thanks to a double from Nicolè and goals from Stacchini and Boniperti, the latter being about to bid his farewell to football.
Juventus’ sharpest win occurred in 1971: the final 5-0 result achieved under torrents of rain was characterized by a wonderful hat trick from Roberto Bettega, match winner on that occasion (without taking into account the fact that his first goal in Serie A occurred in the first round clash on his debut game).
The Bianconeri’s last victory was clinched in 1983/84 season: the 2-0 result is still in all fans’ hearts because it saw Gaetano Scirea show all his brilliance and enter his name on the scoresheet twice within 5 minutes in the first half. Both goals came from a corner.
In recent years, the side from Sicily caused real difficulties to Juventus who, since their return to the top league, have never managed to clinch the three points at the ‘Stadio Olimpico’, achieving three draws (two 1-1 with Ranieri and a 2-2 with Del Neri) and being defeated once (1-2) with Ferrara as manager.
