The moment of the first official match of 2003 is getting closer and closer. After the Christmas holidays and the enjoyable experience in the Emirates, for Juventus it’s time to go back to the fight for the “real” points. On Sunday bianconeri will face Reggina at Delle Alpi for the 16th and penultimate day of first phase of Serie A. There will be 12 months that everyone, starting from Antonio Conte, want to be as good as the previous ones.

“2002 was a positive year for us. We won a scudetto and a Supercoppa Italiana, and we went close to win also the Coppa Italia. Also personally I can be quite satisfied, I was coming back from an injury, I played a lot and I succeded in getting what I wanted the most, the extension of my contract with Juventus. I will start then my 12th year in bianconero”.

The new 2003 will start then with Juventus fighting in all the competitions. In a good position in Serie A, close to the quarterfinals in Champions League and in the quarterfinals in Coppa Italia, ready to face the double match against Perugia.

“We are getting ready more and more every day to face the challenges of this new year – the midfielder from Lecce adds – After we built the bases for doing well in every competitions and we’re ready to give our best to reach some important goals. We are in good conditions and we’re recovering the injured players. This is really important because the group has always been our strenght. We are aware of being many players in this group and that the coach will have to pick up often different players for us to be always competitive”.

January started with a new adventure, the tour in the Emirates, not a new land for Conte. “I had already been in Dubai before this tour. Anyway it was a good experience, to repeat in the future, even for a longer period”.

A travel towards the new frontiers of football, to prepare in the best possibile way the return to the official matches, in which Juventus will try to gain more and more points, starting from the next one against Reggina, a team that bianconeri faced twice in the last month. “It’s a though opponent – Conte concludes – Lately they obtained important results and ther’re aware of their chances. We’ll have to play a great match, properly aggressive and with great concentration.”

This is the list of the 20 players called by Marcello Lippi for the match of Sunday afternoon, at Delle Alpi, against Reggina. Compared to the last match, the Perugia's one, are avaliable Baiocco and Fresi.

1 Gianluigi BUFFON
2 Ciro FERRARA
6 Salvatore FRESI
7 Gianluca PESSOTTO
8 Antonio CONTE
9 Marcelo SALAS
10 Alessandro DEL PIERO
11 Pavel NEDVED
12 Antonio CHIMENTI
14 Cristian ZENONI
15 Alessandro BIRINDELLI
16 Mauro CAMORANESI
17 David TREZEGUET
18 Marco DI VAIO
19 Gianluca ZAMBROTTA
20 Davide BAIOCCO
21 Lilian THURAM
24 Emiliano MORETTI
25 Marcelo ZALAYETA

There are 5 players that Marcello Lippi couldn't use for the match against the Calabrians: they are Olivera, Montero, Tudor, Iuliano and Tacchinardi.

Ruben Olivera is in Uruguay for the Under 20 Southamerican championship to play with his national team. Paolo Montero has a slight injury and will work for one more week to find a better shape. Mark Iuliano and Alessio Tacchinari are improving and have overtaken the muscle troubles. The midfielder may be recovered during the Coppa Italia TIm Cup of Wednesday against Perugia. Same thing goes for Igor Tudor, to be recovered on the next week.

Three weeks after the last official match (a win at the 'Curi' against Perugia) Juventus are ready to play to get the three points. At the 'Delle Alpi' they are meeting Reggina, with whome Juventus played twice in December for the 'Coppa Italia'. "I don't think the result of the first match is so important - Marcello Lippi says -. It's more important thinking about this stop who permitted the players to be fit. I wish we could have a longer stop next year, even if we have to play two weekly matches then. We had good training sessions and I think we could do well on Sunday."

Reggina is the first team to meet in 2003. They were tough in December. "They are surely a great team. Even in Roma they were defeated after hitting twice the posts. But we want to win because the three points are important."

On Sunday it's starting a very important month for the Campionato. Waiting for the Uefa Champions League in February and with the 'Coppa Italia', a lot of supporters think it's the right time to try to win the Campionato. "They are wrong - Lippi says -. Now we have to mantain the position in the standings. I hope I can count on all my players. If I am with my whole team in March, I can win the Campionato'.

Alessandro Del Piero has warned his Juventus teammates to be wary of Reggina, particularly with a defensive crisis on their hands.

“The first few weeks after the Winter break are crucial in the title race,” he said in a message on his personal website.

The reigning Champions are currently in fifth place level on points with Chievo and must step on the accelerator if they are to catch joint leaders Milan and Inter.

“There is no time for slow build-ups now. We need to be off the blocks quickly,” continued the captain.

The Serie A season reaches the midway point next week and tradition usually states that the Winter Queen goes on to take the title.

“We are determined to reach all of our objectives this season in Italy and Europe,” concluded Del Piero. “The points gathered at this stage will be crucial for the final push. We’re ready for this challenge.”

Reggina may be lying in the relegation zone, but they have already beaten Juventus at the Stadio Delle Alpi in a Coppa Italia tie last month. The Bianconeri nonetheless qualified 2-1 on aggregate.

Marcello Lippi is forced to deal with a crisis in defence for this game as Mark Iuliano and Paolo Montero are out of action.

Lilian Thuram will therefore be drafted into central defence alongside Ciro Ferrara, with Gianluca Zambrotta brought deeper into a right-back position.

Del Piero will be accompanied by the now fully recovered David Trezeguet upfront, though the Frenchman will probably only be able to play the first half.

Zambrotta------Thuram---------Ferrara------------Pessotto

Seems good to me! Like the idea of playing Camo and Zambo on the same side! WOW!

And Thuram always played good this season in the centre! Hope that this will work!

that formation is shit! absolutely terrible!

I thought the same way at the beginning, I mean Zenoni/Birindelli could do well in RB .. but again this 'new' formation wasn't tested before, so it might actually work

But Lippi should find the perfect balance between the right and left side of midfield or else our game will be ruined ..
