I guess if you have 3-4 deep CL runs in a row you could maybe financially set yourself up to be a European level club but the odds of that happening are close to zero.

Yeah, I mean they've been doing it the "Right Way." Get to Serie A, build up a stable financial backdrop, develop some talent, build your own stadium, etc. But that next step is (like you said) make European football because that extra 15-20m is MASSIVE. And Sassuolo has not been able to get to that point so they've funded their growth with selling players. That is unsustainable unless you have the most ELITE and lucky scouts of all time.
