BACKGROUND

Can Juve forget about last week's defeat at Brescia easily? Let's hope so for Marcello Lippi's men as their worst nightmare, Lazio, are coming to town.

They are not exactly the sort of Santa Claus gift you might expect: even if they lost against Sturm in Europe and they drew with Inter in strange fashion, Lazio are feared for their unpredicability and swift style of play.

In a frozen Delle Alpi, hardly thawed by Basle's visit in the Champions League Second Phase (crushed 4-0), Juventus hope to get back on the track to success.

Juventus always have a point to prove against Lazio, who "nicked" them a Scudetto two years ago. Key was the early April defeat in the Delle Alpi, which gave hope to Lazio before the title run-in got in motion.

It'll be a match between old friends as many players on the pitch have worn both shirts.

The last time Juve managed to sink Lazio at home was in December 97, in similar sub-zero conditions. Alex Del Piero scored a double before dipping into morale-denting injuries.

Lazio are arguably one of the most surprising teams this term. They produced the best level of football in Serie A, together with AC Milan. Nobody would have thought the Biancocelesti would have soared so high, especially as they have not been paid in months.

The Romans could even be alone on top of the table, but they aren't as they threw away a good chance against Inter. The Nerazzurri came back from being 3-0 down to snatch a draw, which could have also metamorphosed in a shock 3-4 defeat.

What could have been Lazio's finest hour almost turned into a nightmare. It led Roberto Mancini to give reassurances to the squad.

"We need to go to the Delle Alpi relaxed. Even a defeat would not get us in trouble, because we would stay high enough in the table", Mancini told the usual pre-match press conference.

"This means we'll have to remain patient and take it easy. If we play our game without being too stressed out, I'm confident we can get a result in Turin".

Mancini also confirmed that he would seek victory, in the footsteps of Lazio's recent history against Juve.

LATEST TEAM NEWS

According to Juve's website, David Trezeguet should be left out again despite coming back in midweek against Basle. The mystery surrounding the Frenchman's state of fitness is growing. Two major defenders in Gianluca Pessotto and Igor Tudor will also be missing after spending the week on a light schedule.

The poor defeat endured by Lazio reserves versus Sturm Graz may not mean much, it is still a fact that key players had the chance to rest in midweek. Among the ones who will not travel to Turin, the likes of Fernando Couto (suspended) and Manfredini (out of favour) are adding up to Juan Sorin and Mihajlovic's combined absences. Castroman and Marchegiani are also left out.

LOOK OUT FOR...

The weather: it's freezing cold in Turin. This might especially harm Lazio, who have painful experiences of such conditions last season, notably in Verona against Hellas and Chievo. This could be a decisive detail.

Match Preview: Juventus - Lazio

TURIN, December 14 (Serie A) - Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni will be looking for another good performance from Juventus winger Mauro Camoranesi against Lazio tomorrow night after the former Verona star today pledged his allegiance to the Azzurri.

Camoranesi, who is also eligible to play for Argentina, gave the struggling Italy chief a major boost by opting to represent the country of his ancestors.

Camoranesi qualifies for Italy as his grandparents came from the Le Marche region, in the mid-east of the peninsula.

``Trapattoni has been very good to me,'' he told Gazzetta dello Sport. ``He has told me that he is watching me, but has also urged me not to rush myself. By contrast, Argentina have never shown any interest in me at all.''

Camoranesi is expected to get the nod ahead of Gianluca Zambrotta to play alongside Alessio Tacchinardi and Edgar Davids in midfield for the fourth-placed Bianconeri.

But boss Marcello Lippi may decide to leave striker David Trezeguet on the bench.

The French international marked his comeback from a serious knee injury with a goal in the 4-0 thrashing of Basle in Wednesday's Champions League encounter, but Lippi is keen not to rush things with his star striker.

That means Marco Di Vaio, low on confidence after scoring just two league goals this season, is favourite to continue alongside Alessandro Del Piero in attack.

Meanwhile, second-placed Lazio have major defensive worries ahead of the trip to Turin.

Sinisa Mihajlovic will be out for a month with a thigh injury, while Fernando Couto is suspended. That means Paolo Negro and Jaap Stam will form a makeshift central-defensive pairing.

Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti is keen to keep Dutch international Stam at the club by offering him reassurance over payment of wages.

The former Manchester United star is angry that he has not been paid by the cash-strapped Romans since August and has threatened to leave the Biancocelesti.

But Cragnotti has sought to appease Stam by paying the money for September and October into his bank account.

Had the magnate failed to do this, under European law Stam would have been a free agent at the end of the month and could have walked away from the club.

But despite their grave financial difficulties, Lazio boss Roberto Mancini continues to work miracles.

They could return to the top of the league tomorrow night if they win and other results go in their favour, and Mancini is confident that his team can snatch a victory in Turin.

``We have shown on more than one occasion to be at the same level as the big teams,'' he claimed.

``Now we can go on and beat Juventus, although we will obviously have to be at our very best and avoid the errors that saw us draw 3-3 with Inter last weekend.''

That may be true but he's not showing it.

I wonder why Lippi starts Salas anyways, now that Trezeguet is back!

Welcome to the forums, Miguelito! Where are you from?

As far as I know Lazio have played 6 away matches and won them all... Hopefully Juve can stop 'em. But we need to see Juve playing like they did against Milan and Torino.

This will be a cracker... my prediction ---> Juve 3-2 Lazio ;)
Go Neddy!

Chile?! Do you speak Spanish then? If so you, you should check out the "Hablas Español" thread in the Hangout! ;)

I agree that Salas should play ahead of Di Vaio. The latter hasn't impressed me AT ALL so far!
