ROME, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Juventus set a new record for the most points at the halfway stage of a Serie A season when they beat Reggina 1-0 at the weekend.

The win gave the Italian champions 52 points from 19 matches, 10 ahead of second-placed Inter Milan.

Juventus have been in imperious form all season, racking up 17 wins and dropping points just twice - in a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan in October and again in a 1-1 draw against Lazio in December.

Serie A has not always contained 20 teams. The scoring system has also changed over time. Prior to the 1994-95 season a win was worth two points instead of three.

Even so, Fabio Capello's Juventus are still the most successful team ever at this stage of the season, narrowly bettering the previous mark set by the Juve side of the 1949-50, who notched up 16 wins, two draws and a defeat in their opening 19 games - a series that would have given them 50 points under today's scoring system.

Great teams of the more recent past include the 1992-93 Milan side of Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten that collected 15 wins and four draws (49 points under today's scoring system) and Diego Maradona's Napoli side of 1987-88, who won 15, drew three and suffered one defeat (48 points).

"I can't help but be pleased by the numbers," Juve coach Fabio Capello was quoted as saying in La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday.

"But the important thing is to always keep one step ahead of the pursuers - it's the only thing that interests me from here until the end."

Juve eye century record Tuesday 17 January, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus are aiming to win the title this season with a record-breaking 100 points, according to general director Luciano Moggi. "That’ll really make history," he said.
The Bianconeri are runaway leaders in Serie A with 52 points secured at the halfway stage of the season.

Even a slightly worse performance in the second half of the campaign means that Fabio Capello’s men can afford to drop four more points on the title run-in than they managed on the way out and still hit an historic century.

"If we succeed in getting 100 points that’ll really make history," said Moggi. "It will be hard but it is not beyond Juventus.

"We will give it a good go, anyway, although winning the title counts more than records."

Moggi did add, though, that all this talk of Juve – who are 10 points clear of their nearest rivals, Inter - having already won the title does make him a little nervous.

"Every time I hear talk of Juventus having killed the championship race I touch wood," he revealed.

"Certainly, with such a big lead we have the cushion of being able to make mistakes while the others can’t afford any slip-ups – but football is not as logical as maths."

With a 29th Scudetto seemingly there for the taking, La Vecchia Signora also wants to make her mark on the Champions League this season.

It is a competition which has been less kind to the Turin side over the years, who have only won Europe’s Premier tournament on two occasions, the last of which was 10 years ago.

"We are hoping for a repeat of the double success of title and Champions League of a decade ago," said Moggi, referring to Juve’s penalty shoot-out victory over Ajax.

"Last season we were unlucky," he continued. "We were knocked out by Liverpool when Alex Del Piero had a good goal disallowed and the side was blighted by injuries.

"We’re hoping to be a bit luckier in the knock-out stages this time around
