Riquelme Agrees To Join Atlético

Juan Román Riquelme has signed for Atlético de Madrid for a fee of €8m and the deal will be officially announced later today, according to reports in Spain.
The Argentinian midfielder has agreed to a two-year deal at Vicente Calderón with the option for a third season, worth around €5m per year.

Cadena Ser radio station claim that Villarreal just have to agree to some small details before allowing Atlético to announce the deal.

As a result of striking the deal with Riquelme, los Colchoneros will now look to loan out Fabiano Eller or Cléber Santana as they will have four non-EU players in their squad.

Neither Serio Agüero nor Riquelme have European passports and with only three non-EU players allowed the club now want to allow Eller or Cléber to go.

Riquelme fell out with Villarreal before last Christmas and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Boca Juniors.

The Argentinian outfit wanted to make the move permanent, but were unable to match the Spanish club's asking price.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig said that the former Barça playmaker was on the transfer list until the end of the transfer window and that if he did not move then he would be incorporated into Manolo Pellergrini's squad.

Atlético have had a busy summer in the transfer market having already bought Diego Forlán, Simão, José Antonio Reyes, Luís García and Raúl García and they are still in the market for Thiago Motta.
