Riquelme Close To Atlético Move

Atlético de Madrid are closing in on a deal to sign Juan Román Riquelme from Villarreal after the player advised his agents to begin talks with the club.

eports in Spain suggest that the Yellow Submarine and los Colchoneros are close to agreeing a fee of aorund €10m for the Argentinian midfielder.

A deal can be pushed through once Riquelme accepts the personal terms on offer and he is being kept updated on the talks while he focusses on the Copa América.

Riquelme became a hero at Villarreal, but fell out with the board and coaching staff after returning late from holidays and missing training sessions.

A loan deal was quickly agreed with Boca Juniors during the winter transfer window, earlier this year, after he was told he would not play for the Spanish side again.

Despite a successful return to la Bombonera, where he helped Boca to win the Copa Libertadores, the 29-year-old does not want to return home on a permanent basis and is keen to try his luck at Atlético.

Manchester United were said to be interested towards the end of the season, but an offer by the Red Devils was rejected by Villarreal.

As state that Milan, Inter and Lyon are also monitoring his situation, but he does not want to move Italy or France and has set his heart on teaming up with Diego Forlán once again.

The pair were central to Villarreal's drive to the Champions League semi finals two seasons ago as they created an understanding that guided the Castellonese outfit forward.

Forlán has already moved to Atlético, after los Colchoneros met his buy-out clause, and Riquelme is set to join him once the Copa América finishes on Sunday.

Forlán Wants Riquelme To Join Him At Atlético

Diego Forlán wants Juan Román Riquelme to join him at Atlético de Madrid as talks continue over a deal to sign the Argentinian playmaker from Villarreal.

The duo formed a strong partnership at El Madrigal and Forlán believes that he would benefit from having the same supply line at Vicente Calderón.

Riquelme has already been told that he is not wanted by Villarreal and Atlético were hoping to do a double deal for the pair.

Instead, Forlán agreed to a move while Riquelme has yet to find a new club, although negotiations are ongoing.

"If we were to team up again at Atlético it would be fantastic, but it will not be easy," Forlán said.

"I speak to him most days, but only about the Copa América.

"Of course I would like to play with him again. He has incredible ability and is always good to have in your team."

If a move does not materialise for Riquelme, then Forlán knows that he will have to learn to adjust at Atlético.

"I have to adjust to my new team-mates and if there is a player like Román in the squad then that will be great," he continued.

"If not, then I will have to move myself and find the best positions to link up with the new players."

His arrival at Atleti has sparked comparisons with former favourite Fernando Torres, but Forlán does not believe that he has been signed as a replacement.

"The media will continue to compare us and there is not much hope of changing that," he said. "We are both strikers and score goals, but we are different.

"The only thing I can do is to play as best as I know how.

"I have always been measured by the number of goals I score, but if I do reach my own targets then I will remain calm because I know that I will be giving it everything.

"I want to score in every game I play, but that is not always possible."

Nice plan from Villareal actually. They wanted to sell Riquelme but his price was dramatically reduced after his average WC and his bad start in Primera Division this year.So they loaned him in Boca where it was sure he would shine. He had some great matches, and now he has a superb Copa America so he is expensive again.Let an other team pay for him, and if we really want a playmaker let's try to buy Diego or VDV who both are much younger.

but why do we need a riquelme when we have nedved, almiron, tiago, camo in the midfield
with nedved there we dont need a playmaker
Nedved is old. This is his last season, and we need someone for the future.Sad to say that, but I doubt that Neddy will be so effective next season.Let's hope I'll be wrong.
I admit that I've seen almost nothing from Almiron and I hear that he is decent but he is unproven in the big stage.Tiago is a defensive midfielder and Camoranesi's natural position is on the wing.
Well you may disagree, that's only my opinion and of course it can be wrong

Camoranesi's natural position is on the wing.
They play him on the right, but I think his best games are the ones where he played in the middle as a regista.

Riquelme as good as he is, maybe he is a bit too old. The future is the priority with Nedved probably retiring in a year or two. Van Der Vaart who's only 24 would be a great choice.

28-29 is old?
Riquelme has 4-5 years to play.
In Italy players can be great even in the age of 35.
Considering his playing style, he can retire in the age of 63.

I'd welcome him in open hands.

29-29??I thought he was 31.My fault then. But why not buying Van der Vaart?Or maybe Diego?TBH I prefer them to Riquelme...

Would be great to get ourself a playmaker or an attacking mid. This and another defender would wrap up an already decent transfer season.
