Lampard is a playmaker now? What the hell? Next, I'll hear that Roy Keane was the world's best playmaker...

There is a difference between a central midfielder, and a playmaker. A playmaker, generally, is one like Zidane or Riquelme. Not a natural goalscorer or a defensive presence, but has the ability to create attacks, make good passes and set up goalscoring oppurtunities.

Players like Lampard and Ballack are good enough at defending that they aren't singleminded. This doesn't detract from their ability, but because they are not focused almost entirely on offensive play, they are not playmakers.

Nedved is a different story altogether. He's not a playmaker, because he doesn't act as a link between midfield and attack. It's hard to say what he is, but I think that "horizontal winger", makes the most sense.

Im sure u have watched chelsea, and would have noticed that the man who dictates their play is lampard. He is the man who controls their attacks, but he also the man who finishs them. Lamps isnt an attacking midfielder who plays a withdrawn position in the hole, but as you said a central midfielder, but in my eyes he is the man who controls chelseas play, thus in my eyes a playmaker.

Just because he fulfills his duties in attack/defence doesnt mean he is merely central midfielder and not a playmaker.

Imo playmakers dont have to be the classical style such as platini or zidane, whom i class specifically as attacking midfielders, but the player who dictates and control the team.

i totaly agree with #10 when a player like lampard open the play for chelsea and play long and throught balls when he has long distance shot ...and when he is the only guy in chelsea that controls their play 13 goals 2 second goal scorer in the fa and 6 assist the second 2 ...not just that but he defend for me he is better than a "play maker" like the zidan style or whatever coz he isnt as much as technical abilities that they have that doesnt mean he isnt a playmaker and that without mentioning his consecutive games he just dont get tired...thats one player i dream of having in our squad but believe me they wont let him leave for anyone no barca he is a chelsea player they will pay everything he wants money isnt an issue for chelsea

I don't know. I mean, a player like Paul Scholes is certainly an attacking midfielder, but hardly a playmaker. And I wouldn't class central midfielder as less than playmaker.

Can they seriously afford to buy anymore players? Besides, I know Ballack really loves to play all the time, and he also takes an interest in who his manager is. I imagine that Ballack would rather come to Juve, if we offer competitive wages.
